PROVIDENCE, RI - The Manchester Monarchs fought back from a 2-0 deficit heading into the third period to beat the Providence Bruins, 3-2 in a shootout, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday night.
Manchester (2-0-0-1) leads the Atlantic Division with five points. Providence (1-1-0-1) is tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the St. John's IceCaps (1-1-1-0) with three points each.
"Cold pizza again!" said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Seriously though, we showed some push back after being behind by two heading into the third period. Goals by (Andrew) Bodnarchuk and (Brandon) Kozun helped to take the game into the overtime. We could have quit but instead we rose up and willed ourselves back into the game. Some nifty moves in the shootout by (Tyler) Toffoli, (Jordan) Weal and (Andy) Andreoff gave us the extra point. (Martin) Jonesy had another strong game and came up big in the pipes. The players are working hard and again they were rewarded for the effort."
Monarchs' goaltender Martin Jones halted center Alexander Khokhlachev, left wing Matt Fraser and center Carter Camper in the shootout. The lone shooter to beat Jones was center Ryan Spooner. Right wing Tyler Toffoli, center Jordan Weal and left wing Andy Andreoff beat Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg in the shootout. Monarchs' right wing Brandon Kozun shot the puck wide in the third round.
Following a scoreless first period, the Bruins scored a pair of goals in the second stanza to take a 2-0 lead. Right wing Nick Johnson began the scoring with his third tally of the season at 7:40 of the middle frame. Khokhlachev sent the puck to the right point for defenseman Zach Trotman to pick up. Trotman fired a shot toward the net that Johnson tipped past Jones.
Left wing Jared Knight doubled the Bruins lead at 12:42 of the second period with his second goal of the season. Left wing Justin Florek grabbed the puck inside the left point and fed a pass over to right wing Alexander Fallstrom at the hash marks of the right face-off circle. Fallstrom spun around and sent the puck to a wide open Knight at the bottom of the left face-off circle for a one-timer into the back of the net.
The Monarchs cut the Bruins lead in half at 5:10 of the third period. Just 11 seconds into a PSNH Power Play, defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk collected a pass from Kozun and fired a shot through traffic to beat Svedberg. Weal also assisted on the Monarchs lone goal of the game.
Kozun, Bodnarchuk and Weal team up to tie the game at 2-2 at 17:41 of the final frame. Weal sends a pass from the right face-off circle to Bodnarchuk in the left face-off circle. Bodnarchuk redirected a pass over to Kozun between the hash marks for a one-timer to tie the game.
Jones (2-0-1) earned his second shootout victory of the season stopping 24-of-26 shots and 3-of-4 shootout snipers. Svedberg (1-0-1) took his first shootout loss of the season making 32 saves on 34 shots and stopping 1-of-4 shootout shooters.
Manchester was 1-for-4 on the power play. Providence went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Monarchs have played three games during the 2013-14 season and all three games have been pushed to a shootout...Manchester has a 2-1 record in shootouts this season...Right wing Brandon Kozun, center Jordan Weal and defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk combined for both regulation goals for the Monarchs...Goaltender Martin Jones has stopped 11-of-14 shooters in three shootouts this season.
