Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Defenseman Alex Grant registered a hat trick in the first period, while Frederik Andersen earned a 33-save shutout to lead the Norfolk Admirals to a 5-0 victory over the Binghamton Senators Friday night at the Norfolk Scope.
Devante Smith-Pelly set the tone early, scoring a shorthanded goal at 5:44 of the first period. Binghamton got into penalty trouble and the Admirals took full advantage. Charlie Sarault curled at the right wing circle and lifted a pass to the high slot to Alex Grant. Grant wristed a shot that cleanly beat Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond to extend the lead to 2-0.
Less than a minute later, the Admirals converted again on a 5-on-3 power play. A swift passing play was capped off by Peter Holland who buried a shot on the backside of the net to put the score at 3-0.
The Binghamton penalty parade continued, and the Admirals received another two-man advantage. Grant one-timed a shot that screamed past Hammond for his second goal of the game, and Norfolk's fourth of the game.
Grant sealed the hat trick at 19:39 of the opening frame, recording the fourth power play goal for the Admirals and give Norfolk a 5-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Hammond was pulled after the first period, and Nathan Lawson came in a relief at the start of the second period.
Binghamton tried to get back in the game in the second outshooting the Admirals 13-4 in the middle frame. However, Norfolk goaltender Frederik Andersen was sharp in goal on the night and turned aside every shot the Senators threw his way. Andersen kept the hot streak going in the third to preserve the shutout and the 5-0 win for the Admirals on opening night at Scope.
Andersen earns the shutout win making 33 saves, while Hammond takes his first loss on the season allowing five goals on 14 shots. Lawson turned aside all ten shots faced.
The two teams will meet again at Scope on Saturday beginning at 7:15 p.m. Fans can come early and watch the ODU Hockey team battle American University at 2:00 p.m. A ticket to the Admirals games gets you into the ODU game as well!
