South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: For the second straight day against the Dayton Dragons, the South Bend Cubs trailed by at least two runs heading to the bottom of the 4th inning. With another comeback effort, the Cubs came back to win a game for the third time in four days. Today, it was a final of 6-3.
The night started with two Dragons reaching on the first two pitches tossed by Faustino Carrera. They plated three runs in the 1st and jumped out and held onto the commanding 3-0 lead up into the bottom of the 4th.
Carrera kept the Cubs in the game after settling down and sending 14 Dayton hitters down in a row. The comeback bid started in the 4th. Starting with Andy Weber's second hit of the day, South Bend's bats came alive on a rainy night in Downtown South Bend. Weber eventually advanced to third base and came home on an RBI groundout from Nelson Velazquez.
Later in the inning, Tyler Durna smashed his first double of the night and came home to score on another two-bagger by Christopher Morel. South Bend was within a run at 3-2.
Carrera continued to carry the Cubs momentum through seven complete inning and two earned runs allowed. He finished with two strikeouts in a quality start.
After tying the game in the bottom of the 7th, the Cubs barreled down and had another key rally in the 8th inning. On a dart line drive down the first base line, Durna doubled for the second time to score Jonathan Sierra all the way from first. The Durna RBI double was the game deciding hit.
The Cubs added two more runs in the 8th to lead 6-3. After Carrera departed, closer Ethan Roberts shut the door with two scoreless frames. Roberts was the pitcher of record when South Bend took the lead, so he earned the win.
With the victory, the Cubs improve to 23-16 and will have the opportunity for their fourth consecutive series win tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Riley Thompson on the mound.
