
Columbus Acquires Taormina, Tyrell in Exchange for Marchessault, Smith

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons announced Wednesday that the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team's NHL affiliate, have acquired defenseman Matt Taormina and forward Dana Tyrell from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forwards Jonathan Marchessault and Dalton Smith. Taormina and Tyrell were loaned to the Falcons following the trade.
Taormina, 27, has played 41 games for the Syracuse Crunch this season, totaling 18 points (six goals, 12 assists), 20 penalty minutes and a -5 rating. The Warren, Michigan native has also appeared in seven games with Tampa Bay. Standing 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Taormina has played 56 career games at the NHL level between the Lightning and the New Jersey Devils.
Tyrell, 24, has amassed 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists), 20 penalty minutes and a -4 rating this season with the Crunch, while totaling four penalty minutes in seven games with the Lightning. In his fifth professional season, the 5-foot-10, 192-pound forward has played in 132 NHL games, all for Tampa Bay, notching 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists).
Marchessault, 23, leaves the Falcons as the team's leading scorer this season and in 2012-13. So far in 2013-14, the Quebec City native has registered 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) and a -7 rating. Marchessault also led the team in power-play goals (7) and game-winning goals (4) this season. Last year, the 5-foor-9, 180-pound forward recorded a team-high 67 points (21 goals, 46 assists) and represented the Falcons at the 2013 AHL All-Star Game.
Smith, 21, posted nine points (four goals, five assists) and a -8 rating in 50 games with Springfield this season. The Oshawa, Ontario native led the team with 99 penalty minutes.
