Coaches Ink Contract Extension
June 26, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks are proud to announce Associate Coach Kyle Gustafson and Assistant Coach Don Hay have both signed contract extensions to stay in the Pacific Northwest.
Gustafson is about to begin his 17th season with the Winterhawks. During his time in Portland, Gustafson has been on the bench for over 600 wins and 1,000 games and he was a key contributor during the Winterhawks four consecutive Western Conference Championships.
"We're excited to have Kyle signed under a multiyear contract," Head Coach, General Manager and Vice President Mike Johnston said. "He's one of the Western Hockey League's premiere young coaches and he definitely has a promising career professionally."
He will also resume his title as Assistant to the General Manager. In addition to his coaching duties, Gustafson oversees the Winterhawks Hockey School and Charity Golf Event in the summer.
Don Hay has also agreed to return for his second season in Portland as an assistant coach. It will be his 27th overall season coaching in the WHL. Hay is a three-time Memorial Cup Champion and he currently holds the WHL's record for most wins as a head coach with 750.
Hay broke long time Winterhawks Head Coach Ken Hodge's record when he won his 743rd career game in January 2018.
"Don Hay has had a major impact on several organizations in our league and having worked with him in the past, I know I speak on behalf of the players and staff that we are all excited to have him back in Portland next year," Johnston said.
Before coming to Portland, Hay and Johnston previously coached together and won a gold medal for Hockey Canada during the 1994 World Junior Championships.
