Clark's Gem Leads Freedom to 4-1 Win Over Joliet
June 7, 2011 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Andy Clark pitched a seven inning gem and the Freedom provided just enough offense to earn a 4-1 win Tuesday night.
Clark took the mound for the fourth time this season and allowed one run on seven hits. He allowed a hit in five of his seven innings, but for the second straight home outing, Clark struck out 10 batters to help him get out of some jams.
The Freedom fell behind in the top of the second when Clark left a fastball up that Kyle Maunus hit to left-center field for a home run. It was the fourth home run given up by Clark this season, but he settled down after that to give up only five hits the rest of the way.
Florence answered right back for their fifth come-from-behind win of the season. Chris Curley doubled to extend his hitting streak to 16 and scored on an RBI single by Jonathan Cisneros. It was Cisneros' eighth RBI of the season.
The Freedom got back to business in the third against Joliet starter Billy Petrick. Petrick was hammered only five days ago by the Freedom offense, but held his own in this one. Jimmy Baker walked with one out in the third and came around to score Mark Samuelson's RBI single through the hole on the right side of the infield.
Joliet threatened in the fifth against Clark with runners on first and second and one out. Slammers left fielder Thomas Creal drove one to deep right field but Juan Valdes made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch as he ran into the wall to rob Creal. The runner on second advanced to third, but Clark got one of his 10 strikeouts at a big time to keep the Freedom lead at one.
The Freedom added insurance in the bottom of the eighth thanks to some defensive miscues by the Slammers. After consecutive singles with one out by Cisneros and Junior Arrojo, Cole Miles chopped a ball to the Joliet pitcher, but the throw to second was dropped by Slammers' shortstop Brad Netzel and Cisneros came around to score on the play. A Juan Valdes pop up to second base was dropped as well, and that scored Arrojo to make it 4-1 Freedom.
Chad Robinson and Corey Martin shut down the Joliet offense in the eighth and ninth innings as Florence pitching retired the last 12 batters. The Freedom have won all four against the Slammers this season and are now 10-6 this season, two games out of first in the Frontier League West. The Slammers drop to 8-8. Lefty Chris Ingoglia (2-0, 1.96) throws against Jake Renshaw (1-2, 3.43) on Winning Wednesday presented by stockpilingmoms.com. Pom-pom's will be given away to the first 500 kids 12 and under. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Quick Notes: Cole Miles also extended his hitting streak to 16 games, as he went 3-for-4 with an intentional walk...the Freedom are 6-0 this season when allowing three runs or less to an opponent.
