Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The River City Rascals hit three home runs and benefitted from seven walks to defeat the Rockford RiverHawks 8-4 Tuesday evening at Road Ranger Stadium.

The Rascals drew three leadoff walks, including in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Bobby Burk drew the first walk and advanced to second two batters later on third baseman Chris McClendon's walk. Right fielder Stephen Holdren followed with a three-run homer to give River City the early lead.

Rascals' left fielder Chad Maddox led off the third with a walk, and two batters later center fielder Brandon Johnson drew another walk to put runners at first and second with only one out. Catcher Danny Sawyer then reached base on an error by shortstop Jake Eigsti. The miscue allowed the ball to bounce into left field where Caleb Curry committed the RiverHawks' third error.

As a result, Maddox and Johnson both scored unearned runs to give the Rascals a 5-0 advantage. The RiverHawks got on the board in the fourth when first baseman Jeremy Hamilton hit a leadoff homer into right field, his third of the season. Third baseman Matt Greener then hit a triple that got past the diving Johnson, and all the way to the center field wall. Greener subsequently scored on third baseman Luis Parache's RBI sac fly.

Rockford starter Guido Fonseca, Jr. (1-3) ended his night with three scoreless innings, but suffered the loss. He threw six innings, allowing five runs, three earned with three stirkeouts and six walks. Fonseca's six walks ties a RiverHawks season high.

With Fonseca out of the game, the RiverHawks scored two more runs in the seventh. Greener drove in center fielder Freddy Parejo with an RBI single, and Parache had an RBI ground out that brought home shortstop Jake Eigsti.

Ahead 5-4, River City tacked on three insurance runs on a pair of homers in the final two innings. Maddox had one to begin the eighth, and second baseman Doug Sanders crushed a two-run shot down the left field line in the ninth.

In his professional debut, River City starter Don Lisi (1-0) earned the win. He surrendered just two runs on six hits in five innings.

The Rascals and RiverHawks play game two of this three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Road Ranger Stadium. It will be the first of two Faith Nights at the ballpark, as well as the second RiverHawks Idol night.
