Tuesday, June 7 - 6:05 p.m. CST
Champion Window Field - Florence, KY
Game #16 - Road Game #7 (8-7, 3-3)
RHP #55 BILLY PETRICK (1-2, 5.87 ERA) vs. RHP ANDY CLARK (2-0, 5.40 ERA)
Last Time Out.
The Joliet Slammers (8-7) scored eight runs in the fourth inning, capped off by a Yasel Gutierrez grand slam as they swept the Evansville Otters (2-13) with an 11-6 victory Sunday afternoon. The Slammers fell behind 5-0 early as Kevin Crimmel was roughed up in the second inning. But the rookie out of Villanova settled down after that and went five innings to get the win. The fourth inning started with a Gutierrez single and Erik Lis crushed his first of two homers to cut the deficit to three. RBI singles from Thomas Creal and Bobby Leeper cut the deficit to 5-4. Hector Pellot drew a walk to load the bases and Gutierrez unloaded on a 3-2 pitch for the first grand slam in franchise history. Lis would tack on his second homer of the day later on as the Slammers moved to one game over .500 on the season and stayed one game back of the Windy City ThunderBolts in the East Division.
For Starters.
Loyal Cubs fans might remember Billy Petrick. He played for them just four years ago. The 26-year old from Morris, Illinois was selected by Chicago in the third round of the 2002 Amateur Draft. Petrick made a big splash in 2007. He started the year in Daytona and after six strong games was promoted to Double-A Tennessee. With the Smokies he was 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 18 games before moving up to the Iowa Cubs. After only nine games with Iowa, Petrick got the call every player dreams of hearing: he was going to "The Show." Petrick stepped on the mound for the first time at baseball's highest level on June 27, 2007 at Wrigley Field against the Colorado Rockies. He held opponents scoreless in five out of eight appearances. Since his time with the Cubs, Petrick spent 2008 with Daytona before being granted free agency. He pitched effectively for the Windy City Thunderbolts in 2009 until surgery ended his season. After a short stint with the Jackhammers last year, Petrick is ready to go with the Slammers.
Offensive explosion.
The eight runs the Slammers scored in the fourth inning on Sunday are more than they've scored on the season in the first (4), third (3), sixth (4), and ninth (1) innings. The 11 runs the Slammers scored were the most they've tallied in one game and more than they totaled in the entire Windy City series (5) earlier in the year.
Swept away.
The Slammers' sweep of Evansville this past weekend was the first in franchise history. It came at the right time too as they had just been swept for the first time in franchise history the series before against Florence.
Powerball.
Erik Lis has four homers of the year, and they've come in two games. He hit two on Sunday and two on May 27.
Crime Prevention.
Catcher Ben Hewett has thrown out 4 of 7 attempted base stealers thus far, mowing down runners at a 57% clip on the young season. Hewett has been behind the plate for 5 of the Slammers' 8 victories this year.
Save me.
Joliet native Ryan Quigley has been nearly untouchable as the closer for the Slammers. In 6 appearances, Quigley has struck-out nine batters in six innings, giving up only two hits. He is tied for 2nd in the Frontier League with four saves and has yet to allow a run.
Transaction Wire.
The Slammers signed outfielder Thomas Creal on June 4. They released RHP Andy Deain. Joliet signed infielder and Saint Joseph's University product Sean Estand last Friday. Estand was a 3rd Team All-American at Saint Joe's. They put OF Josh Flores on the 7-Day DL.
