June 7, 2011 - Frontier League (FL)
Normal CornBelters News Release

The Normal CornBelters presented by the Illinois Corn Farmers pounded the Lake Erie Crushers 12-3 Tuesday night at the Corn Crib. After 12 runs in the first three innings, Normal starter Ryan Sheldon (3-0) pitched five innings of one-run baseball to record the win. Travis Risser (1-3) of the Crushers pitched four innings allowing all 12 runs, eight of which were earned.

Lake Erie struck first when Andrew Davis belted a homerun over the left field wall giving the Crushers a 1-0 lead in the 1st, but Normal wasted no time answering back. Alvaro Ramirez started the inning with a double and scored on Nick Mahin's error evening the score 1-1. Jeff Dunbar then singled later in the frame to bring home Frank Martinez and give the CornBelters a 2-1 lead. Asif Shah gave Normal a three-run cushion with a two-run dinger over the left field wall, putting the CornBelters up 4-1.

Risser could not stop the bleeding as the Belters added five more runs in the second. Martinez singled home Brad Agustin and Ramirez for the first two runs. Daniel Cox then followed with a single to put two on for Steve Alexander. The Normal first baseman took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a three-run homer, giving the CornBelters a 9-1 lead.

The CornBelters added on three more runs in the 3rd thanks to a bases loaded RBI groundout from Martinez scoring Tyler Keeble. Cox then tacked on two more runs to provide Normal with a 12-1 lead over the Crushers.

Lake Erie did not get a run back until the 8th inning, as Zac Messer and Patrick Norris hit consecutive singles allowing Scott Houin to ground out and score Messer to cut the lead to 12-2. The Crushers would add on one more in the 9th off a wild pitch for the final run of the game.

Sheldon allowed just three hits in his five innings of work. Jacob Liedka, Liam Ohlmann, and Marshall Schuler combined for four innings, four hits, and two runs out of the bullpen. Alvaro Ramirez finished 3-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. With Colin Moro's 7th inning double, every starting CornBelter recorded a hit in Tuesday's win.

The team also released right-handed pitcher Josef Smith on Tuesday afternoon.

Normal improves to 8-8 and Lake Erie falls to 6-10. Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7 PM at the Corn Crib. Starters for Wednesday's game are Lake Erie's Josh Roberts (1-2, 6.38) and Normal's Tyler Lavigne (1-2, 3.72). Fans who bring a canned food item to the game will receive a free small popcorn.
