Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Thanks to a two-run sixth inning and an impressive performance from starter Jhonny Montoya, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, defeated the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 2-1.
After stranding runners at third base in the first and second innings and facing a one-run deficit, the Wild Things capitalized offensively in the sixth. Chris Sidick led off the inning with a single and stole second. Scott Lawson then stepped to the plate and crushed a book-rule double, scoring Sidick and tying the score at 1. Lawson then attempted to steal third when an errant throw from catcher Sean Coughlin sailed wide of the third base bag, allowing Lawson to score and giving Washington a 2-1 advantage.
Washington starter Jhonny Montoya, after allowing one run and two hits through his first six innings, ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. When the Miners loaded the bases with no outs, Montoya got some help from his defense. Third baseman Kevyn Feiner and catcher Black Ochoa teamed up for a double play to retire the potential tying run and keep the lead in tact. Kevin Hammons came on in relief after the double play and got out of the inning when Ochoa gunned down Jereme Milons trying to steal third, keeping the Wild Things in front 2-1.
Montoya (1-1) fired 6.2 innings, allowing only one run (earned) on three hits, striking out five and walking two, en route to his first victory of the season. Hammons pitched 2.1 perfect innings of relief to pick up his first save of the season.
Shawn Joy (1-2) suffered the loss for Southern Illinois, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings of work.
The Miners only run of the night came in the fourth inning when Josh Womack scored on an RBI double from Sean Coughlin.
Six Wild Things recorded a hit in the game with Lawson's RBI double the only one for extra bases.
