Lake Erie Crushers News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal Cornbelters scored all 12 of their runs in the first three innings of Tuesday night's contest at the Corn Crib, as they sent the Crushers to their fourth straight loss by taking the first game of the series, 12-3.
The four game losing streak for the Crushers (6-10) is their longest of the season, while the victory for Normal (8-8) puts them back at the .500 mark for the first time in 10 days.
For the third night in a row, the Crushers got on the board first. Andrew Davis belted his third homerun of the season in the top of the first inning to give the Crushers their only lead of the contest.
Normal was able to take advantage of a pair of costly Crushers' errors in the inning to score four times. Alvaro Ramirez started the inning with a double. The next batter, Frank Martinez hit a ground ball to first base, which Nick Mahin wasn't able to handle. Mahin tried to flip the ball to Travis Risser at first base, but the ball went into foul territory, allowing Ramirez to score.
The next batter, Daniel Cox hit a sharp ground ball to short, which appeared to be a double play ball, but Andrew Davis's flip to second base bounced off of Zac Messser's glove, allowing everyone to reach. Jeff Dunbar's base hit then scored Martinez, and Asif Shah capped the inning with a two-run homer.
The Cornbelters added five more in the second inning. Brad Agustin hit a ground ball to short, which Davis couldn't handle, before Ramirez struck for his second double of the night, and they both scored on Martinez's base hit. Cox followed with a single, and came home on Steven Alexander's two-run blast.
Martinez brought in the first of three runs in the bottom of the third inning on a groundout which brought Tyler Keeble home, and Cox singled in the final two runs of the inning, to give the Cornbelters a 12-1 lead after three innings.
In the eighth, Messer started the inning with a double down the right field line and made his way to third on Patrick Norris's single. Scott Houin then grounded into a double play which brought Messer home. Jason Taylor singled to start the ninth inning, and scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
Ryan Sheldon (3-0) allowed just a run on three hits over five innings to snag his second consecutive victory over the Crushers. Risser (1-3) was tagged for all 12 runs, only eight of which were earned, on 10 hits over three innings in a losing effort. Greg Hendrix delivered five scoreless innings of relief for the Crushers, and was the only other Crushers pitcher to see action on the night.
Every position player saw action for the Crushers, as multiple substitutions were made throughout the game. Davis's solo homerun extended his on base streak to 16 games, as he has reached in every contest so far this season.
The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Normal (Ill.) Cornbelters at the Corn Crib on Wednesday night. Right hander Josh Roberts (1-2, 6.38) will get the start for the Crushers, and the Cornbelters will counter with right hander Tyler Lavigne (1-2, 3.72).The first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
