Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Wheeling, WV - The Johnstown Chiefs erased a first-period lead, and picked up a 5-3 victory at WesBanco Arena on Friday night.
The Nailers used two odd-man rushes to their advantage to take a 2-0 lead after the first period. Vadim Slivchenko got behind Brandon Straub for a breakaway, and tucked a shot by Ryan Nie for the Nailers' first tally at 12:27 of the first. Kyle Rank followed on by finishing off a 2-on-1 with Aaron Clarke with 1:29 left in the opening frame.
The Chiefs' offense exploded for three second period goals to wipe out the Nailers' first period lead. Tyler Hirsch scored his ninth of the year when he wired a wrist shot past Curtis Darling's outstretched glove at 6:23 of the second. Brandon Straub got in on the act with his third of the year, tying the game with 5:01 left in the second. Jean Desrochers started the play by sending the puck in front from the left wing. Mike Sgroi had the first crack at the loose puck, but Straub touched it in.
Kenny Roche's power play goal, his third on the year, at 17:24 of the second put the Chiefs in front for the first time in the game. Once again the Chiefs out-manned the Nailers in front of their net with Roche as the benefactor.
Alex Imbeault cashed in with a 5-on-3 power play goal just 55 seconds in to the third to stake the Chiefs to a 4-2 lead. Chris Snavely gave the Nailers a glimmer of hope with a power play goal of his own 4:26 after Imbeault's. Tyler Hirsch's second goal of the night with 4:40 remaining sealed the win for the Chiefs. Mike Sgroi assisted on Hirsch's second, giving him three assists for the night, and Ryan Garlock extended his team-leading point streak to 11 games with an assist on Imbeault's goal.
Ryan Nie won his 20th game of the season by turning aside 20 of the Nailer's 23 shots, and he was helped out by a power play that went 2-for-10.
