February 29, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Elmira, NY- In Yannick Tifu's first game back from Rochester, where he had 3 goals and 4 assists in 19 games, he opened the scoring for the Bombers (24-19-5-50, blasting away for a goal at the 11:56 mark in the first period. The play was set up by a 3-on-1 breakaway with the assist going to Brad Bonello. The goal gave Yannick his 14th of the year as a Bomber. Elmira's Jackals (31-16-3-4) did get on the scoreboard first, though, as Bruce Watson slipped one in past Jeremy Duchesne. Dayton kept the puck in their offensive zone for most of the period as they outshot Elmira 9-7.
As the second period got underway the Bombers were able to hold off a 5-on-3 advantage for the Jackals, only giving up three shots during that minute and a half. However, Elmira was able to convert later on the power play when Jim McKenzie got the team's second goal of the night. Just three minutes later, Masahito Nishiwaki tied the score again, taking both teams to two, with his 13th goal of the season. Tifu added to his team-leading assists with number 42 for the season and his second point gained for the night. Captain Greg Labenski helped with the goal as well, getting the second assist.
In the third period, dominated by penalties (three for each team), both the Bombers and the Jackals were able to capitalize on one power play. Nishiwaki notched his second goal of the night at the 6:35 mark, with Mike Berry and Brad Bonello getting the assists. Jeremy Duchesne was solid in net, stopping 13 of 14 shots in the period and allowing only the one goal to Benoit Doucet at the 13:56 mark.
The Bombers headed into overtime for the fourth time in the last five games. Duchesne came up with the save of the night when he stopped a wide-open breakaway with just seconds remaining before the shootout. He ended the OT period, having stopped all four Jackals' shots, setting up yet another shootout for Dayton.
The Bombers began their shootout line-up with Yannick Tifu, who put it in to give Dayton the early lead. They added one more when Matt Beaudoin got Dayton their second goal in the shootout. That would be all the help Jeremy Duchesne needed, as he stopped 4 out of 5 in the shootout and 37 out of 40 during the game.
The Bombers return to action at the Nutter Center on Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, against the Trenton Devils, and Sunday, March 16, against the Cincinnati Cyclones for a three-day St. Patrick's Day weekend! The Bombers will wear specialty jerseys that will be up for bids on Saturday night (available for pick up after the game on Sunday) at a live post-game auction on the flight deck. Green beer will also be available throughout the arena!
