South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - Forward Andrew Cherniwchan scored twice to help the South Carolina Stingrays (14-10-1-4) topple the Wheeling Nailers (12-13-0-0) 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night. The Stingrays extended their point streak to six games (5-0-1-0) and sit unbeaten in 11 of their last 12 contests (10-1-1-0).
Forward Braden Pimm put the Stingrays in front at 12:49 of the first period tracking down a bouncing puck and tucking it under the pads of Nailers goaltender Franky Palazzese (L, 34 saves on 36 shots). Forward Wade Epp and forward Derek DeBlois added assists.
Early in the second period, the Nailers evened the score as defenseman Morgan Ellis blasted a feed from former Stingray Nick Kuqali past netminder Jeff Jakaits (W, 24 saves on 25 shots) at 2:11. Late in the frame, Cherniwchan put the Stingrays back on top on the power play at 17:32 beating Palazzese along the goal line. Forwards Wayne Simpson and Brandon Hynes setup Cherniwchan's third goal of the season.
Cherniwchan sealed the victory with an empty-net tally with less than a second left in the game with help from defenseman Drew MacKenzie and forward Patrick Gaul. The Stingrays finished the contest 1-for-5 on the power play while the Nailers went 0-for-3.
