December 27, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- Franky Palazzese turned in a stellar performance between the pipes for the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night, making 34 saves. Unfortunately, his offense was only able to provide one goal, as the Nailers fell to the South Carolina Stingrays, 3-1 at North Charleston Coliseum.

One goal was scored in the first period, and it went the way of the Stingrays with 7:11 remaining in the frame. Derek DeBlois took a hit to move the puck up the left wing wall to Wade Epp at the left point. Epp let a shot go from that location, but Franky Palazzese was successful in making the save. However, the rebound kicked out to Braden Pimm, who was parked on the right side of the crease, allowing him to backhand the first goal in along the ice.

Wheeling battled back to tie the score 2:11 into the middle frame, catching the opposition in a line change. After an offensive rush was thwarted, Nicholas Kuqali zipped a pass across the blueline to Morgan Ellis, who was slotted slightly to the left. Ellis hammered a one-timer along the ice, finding the twine for the equalizer. With 2:28 left in the period, South Carolina jumped back on top, courtesy of a power play goal. Andrew Cherniwchan dragged the puck above the goal line, finding just enough daylight to squeeze in the marker.

Tempers flared in the third period, but only one puck turned on the red light, as Cherniwchan completed the Stingrays' 3-1 victory with an empty netter in the last second.

Jeff Jakaitis got the win for South Carolina, making 24 saves on 25 shots. Franky Palazzese played extremely well for Wheeling, turning away 34 of the 36 shots he faced, but ended up on the short end of the score.

The Nailers and Stingrays will do battle again on Sunday, with a 3:05 face-off at North Charleston Coliseum. Wheeling's next home game takes place on January 9th at 7:35 against the Reading Royals.
