Winning Streak Ends in 3-2 Setback to Gwinnett
December 27, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors (19-10-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, notched a season-high 43 shots on Saturday, but suffered a 3-2 setback to the Gwinnett Gladiators (9-16-1) at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Forward Travis Ouellette netted the game-winner with less than five minutes to play as Gwinnett snapped Greenville's five-game winning streak and 10-game point streak (9-0-1). The Road Warriors are now 8-2-0 on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink this season.
Following a scoreless first period, the Gladiators jumped on the board at 2:11 of the middle frame when Will MacDonald earned his second goal of the season. From the right point, Marshall Everson pounded a slap shot on target that was tipped by MacDonald from the slot and past the blocker of goaltender Jeff Malcolm.
Greenville answered at 17:05 of the second period when Tyler Brown capitalized on the team's fifth power play chance of the contest. With time running out on Ouellette's hooking minor, Vinny Saponari fired a shot from the blue line that was answered by goaltender Adam Brown. The rebound, however, bounced directly to Brown on the right side who pushed it home for his eighth goal of the season overall.
James Melindy put the Gladiators back on top just 2:46 into the third period when he beat Malcolm on the power play for his first goal of the season. The tally was set up by a slashing minor to Trevor Parkes just 63 seconds into the frame.
Less than four minutes later, the Road Warriors evened the game at 2-2 when Chris McCarthy was gifted with an open net at the 6:05 mark. From the perimeter, Andrew Himelson ripped a shot wide of the net that bounced hard off of end-wall and directly to McCarthy at the back door. Brown was well out of position, which allowed McCarthy an open look for his sixth goal of the season.
Ouellette produced the final tally of the contest at 15:51 of the third period when J.P. Labardo threw a cross-ice pass to Ouellette in the left circle, who sent a one-timer past Malcolm's blocker for the game-winning goal.
The Road Warriors finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill. It was the first time this season Greenville has lost when scoring at least once on the man advantage (9-1-0).
Malcolm (11-5-0) made 36 saves and suffered the loss, while Brown (3-5-0) stopped 41 shots for the win.
Greenville outshot Gwinnett 43-39.
