Checkers Sign Michigan State Leading Scorer Schepke

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has signed forward Matt Schepke and agreed to terms with goaltender Parker Van Buskirk.
Schepke, 5-foot-9, 196 pounds, played three seasons with Michigan State University where he won a national championship in his first year in the program. After dressing in 38 games this season, the Warren, Mich. native led the Spartans in scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points with 67 penalty minutes. Schepke is expected to make his professional debut this weekend as the Checkers battle the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday and South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Van Buskirk, 6-feet-0, 190 pounds, has spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting, Saginaw Spirit, Belleville Bulls and the Kitchner Rangers. This season, the Windsor, Ontario netminder played in 51 games for the Rangers with a record of 19-25-5 holding a 90.1% save percentage with a 3.37 goals against average. Van Buskirk is expected to join the team on Sunday.
The Checkers are in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next Checkers home game will take place on March 14 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
