Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jeff Daniels, general manager and head coach of the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, today announced that the team has released center A.J. Jenks from his professional tryout contract and reassigned goalie Daniel Altshuller to the ECHL's Florida Everblades.

Since signing with Charlotte on Oct. 24, Jenks, 24, scored six points (2g, 4a) and recorded 12 penalty minutes in 27 games. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Wolverine Lake, MI, returns to the ECHL's Toledo Walleye, where he went scoreless in one game prior to joining the Checkers.

A fourth-round draft pick (100th overall) of the Florida Panthers in 2008, Jenks, who previously played for the Checkers under an NHL contract with the parent Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-13 and under an earlier PTO during the 2013-14 season, has 23 points (9g, 14a) in 90 total games with Charlotte. He has 44 points (17g, 27a) in 178 career AHL games with Rochester, San Antonio and Charlotte.

Altshuller, a 20-year-old rookie from Nepean, Ontario, provided backup for each of the Checkers' last three games after earning his first AHL recall on Dec. 27. The Hurricanes' third-round draft choice (69th overall) in 2012, Altshuller (6'4", 201 lbs.) has a 6-1-0 record, 3.19 goals-against average and .886 save percentage in his first eight professional games with the Everblades this season. He has yet to make his AHL debut.

Following a three-game road trip, the Checkers return home to face the Texas Stars this Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (3 p.m.).
