January 2, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
To begin a weekend back-to-back set, the Oklahoma City Barons (22-7-2-2) handed the Lake Erie Monsters (14-13-2-3) a 3-2 loss before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 11,685 Friday night. Joey Hishon and Trevor Cheek scored for the Monsters. The two teams meet again at The Q on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
After a scoreless first period, Oklahoma City scored first when identical twin brothers teamed up for the game's first tally. Kellen Jones found Connor Jones in front of the net, and Connor Jones, without hesitation, snapped a puck past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard at 8:11 of the second period.
Joey Hishon knotted the game at 1-1 when he carried the puck up the left side and slipped a puck past Brossoit from a near-impossible angle. The goal was his seventh of the season for the Monsters, and was scored at 13:06 of the second period with assists to Troy Bourke and Duncan Siemens. The game was tied for just 1:06 though, as the Barons Josh Winquist scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 14:20 of the second period to give Oklahoma City a 2-1 lead.
Trevor Cheek tied the game 2-2 for the Monsters at 2:17 of the third period with his second goal of the season. Hishon spotted Cheek in front of the net, and from the center of the blue line, Hishon connected on a pass with Cheek. Cheek spun to his forehand, and snapped a high shot past Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit. Reid Petryk also assisted on the goal.
The Barons answered with the eventual game-winning goal at 5:47 of the third period when Ryan Hamilton took a centering feed and tapped the puck past Pickard making the score 3-2.
Pickard stopped 30 of 33 shots for the Monsters as his personal four-game win streak was snapped. Pickard is 7-5-3 on the season. Brossoit stopped 33 of 35 Monsters shots, improving his personal record to 12-4-0.
The Monsters and Barons play again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's game airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer'.
