Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Dany Heatley's second goal of the night for Norfolk tied the game with 35 seconds left to force overtime, but the Lehigh Valley Phantoms struck 2:32 into the extra session for a 3-2 victory over the Admirals Friday night.

Nearing the halfway point of the first period, the Admirals opened the scoring for just the ninth time in 32 games. While on the power play, goaltender John Gibson made a stretch pass up ice which hit Nic Kerdiles' stick near the blue line. Coming up the right side, Kerdiles passed the puck to Dany Heatley across the paint, who tapped it in past Phantoms netminder Rob Zepp at 8:40. The Admirals skated into the first intermission up 1-0.

After a scoreless second period, Lehigh Valley tied up the game. With the teams at 4-on-4, the Phantoms' Brandon Alderson streaked up the right side and fired one from the hashmarks, which beat Gibson through the right side. Brandon Manning and Brett Flemming recorded the assists at 13:01 of the third period.

Late in the final frame, Lehigh Valley struck again to take its first lead of the night. Jason Akeson intercepted a Charlie Sarault pass and sped up the ice in all alone on Gibson. Akeson faked out the Admirals goaltender and feathered the puck past Gibson's left pad to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead at 18:12.

However, the Admirals were not done. Max Friberg controlled the puck behind the net in Lehigh Valley's zone and passed it to Chris Wagner in the right circle. Clark spotted Heatley waiting in front and Heatley buried the feed past Zepp with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Despite Norfolk's winning home record, the game would end in the visitors' favor. At 2:32 of the extra frame, Nick Cousins skated up the right wall and snapped the puck on net. Sailing over Gibson's blocker and hitting twine, Cousins' unassisted tally gave Lehigh Valley the 3-2 decision.

Zepp stopped 34 of 36 shots, while Gibson made 31 saves on 34 shots.

The Phantoms went 0-for-3 on the power play, and the Admirals went 2-for-5 with the man-advantage.

Norfolk rematches with Lehigh Valley tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. before embarking on a four-game road trip.
