Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Sound Tigers dropped their first contest of 2015, falling to the Providence Bruins 4-2 on Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
The Sound Tigers got on the board first thanks in large part to a player making his return. After missing the past eight games with an injury, John Persson created space in front of the Bruins net. The puck made its way back into the slot, where Scooter Vaughan fired a shot past Malcolm Subban to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first, Providence earned a power play with just under six minutes to go in the period. Although they did not score and nearly allowed a short-handed goal, they took advantage of a poor change by the Sound Tigers just after the penalty expired. Matt Lindblad broke away, pulled a shifty move and slipped the puck past Kevin Poulin to tie the game at one. It was the first goal Bridgeport allowed to Providence this season.
Much like Tuesday night, the Sound Tigers regained their one-goal lead in the second period. Adam Pelech corralled the puck at the blue line and sent a waist high shot towards the net. Chris Langkow deflected the puck through the five hole of Subban to make it 2-1.
And much like Tuesday night, the Bruins had an answer. This time, it was Tyler Randell, deflecting a point shot over Poulin to tie the game up 2-2. Randell's fifth of the season came just three minutes after Langkow's goal.
Midway through the second period, with Cory Conacher off for high sticking, the Bruins took advantage of the power play. Ben Youds walked his way in from the point and wristed a shot through a screen that beat Poulin to make it 3-2 Bruins. It was the first time the Bruins had a lead against the Sound Tigers all season.
The third period was the time for the goaltenders to shine. First it was Kevin Poulin, coming up with a save on a Bruins two-on-one while Providence was short-handed. Not long after, Poulin was down and out, but kicked up the pad from the seat of his pants to keep the game at 3-2.
Late in the third, it was Subban's turn, making a pair of marvelous pad stops to preserve the win. The first came on Alan Quine on the final Sound Tigers power play, kicking out the right pad with Quine on the doorstep. A minute later, he made a similar save on Conacher, holding the post while down on his stomach.
Rob Flick finished off the game with an empty-netter to help the Bruins to their first win against the Sound Tigers this year. Poulin made 34 saves in the loss while Subban stopped 28 for the win.
The Sound Tigers come home for a pair of home games tomorrow and Sunday against the Albany Devils. Game time on Saturday is 7:00 p.m. while Sunday is 3:00 p.m.
Notes: Kevin Poulin saw his shutout streak this season against the Bruins end at 136:39 with Lindblad's first period goal...The Sound Tigers were forced to play with just five defensemen the entire game after Ryan Pulock left the game with an injury after the first shift of the game.
