Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Columbia, South Carolina - Friday, January 20, 2006) Dusty Jamieson continued his torrid scoring with a pair of goals and two assists for four points, and Brandon Cullen chipped in with a pair of tallies as the Charlotte Checkers beat the Columbia Inferno 5-3 Friday night in Columbia. Nathan Gillies scored the other Checkers goal in the victory.
The Checkers scored three straight goals in the third period, including two short-handed goals within 20 seconds on the same Inferno power play. Charlotte sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
The win was Charlotte's second in a row and extended Columbia's winless streak to 14 games at 0-12-2. The victory also got the Checkers road record back to .500 at 11-11-2.
Jamieson has five goals and three assists for eight points in two games this week, both victories. Checkers goalie Jeff Glass notched his ninth win of the season with 33 saves. Columbia goalie Chris Houle made 31 saves in the defeat.
"It was a real gutty effort by our guys tonight," remarked Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson. "Jeff Glass was probably the best player on the ice, especially in the first two periods. Dusty play has been phenomenal and with us being short-handed, it was a huge road win."
After a scoreless first period, Charlotte scored the only goal in the second frame, as Cullen scored his first of two on a power play at 6:39 for a 1-0 Checkers lead. In the first two periods Charlotte stopped all 25 Columbia shots along with thwarting six Inferno power plays.
Columbia took its first lead of the game at 2-1 early in the final period on goals by Brandon Nolan and Leon Hayward two minutes apart. But midway through the period Charlotte scored three unanswered goals, including Gillies' and Jamieson's back-to-back, short-handed goals and Cullen's even strength marker for a 4-2 advantage.
Travis Lisabeth drew the Inferno to within one at 4-3 with six minutes to go. Late in the game Columbia pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, but Jamieson scored an empty-net tally with 39 seconds left to secure the 5-3 final.
Charlotte improved its record to 20-16-3 for 43 points while the Inferno fell to 13-22-5 for 31 points. The Checkers will stage their first Saturday night home game of the season tomorrow night when they'll host the Greenville Grrrowl at Charlotte Bobcats Arena at 7:00 p.m.
