All-Star Festivities Include Stanley Cup, Kelly Cup
Published on January 21, 2006 under ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced on Saturday that the Stanley Cup and
the Patrick J. Kelly Cup will both be on display at events throughout the
ECHL All-Star Game presented by Bud Light on Tuesday and Wednesday in
Fresno, Calif.
It will be the seventh consecutive year that the Kelly Cup and the Stanley
Cup have been displayed together at the ECHL All-Star Game.
The "Keeper of the Cup" from the Hockey Hall of Fame also will be available
to answer questions and talk about the history of hockey. Fans will have
the opportunity to have photographs taken with the Stanley Cup and make a
monetary donation towards hurricane relief. From Oct. 26-Dec. 17, the NHL
and the Hockey Hall of Fame toured the Stanley Cup to 20 of the 25 teams in
the ECHL to help raise awareness and donations for hurricane relief
efforts, resulting in over $10,000 in donations.
Fans will have the opportunity to have photographs taken with both the
Stanley Cup and the Kelly Cup at the Skills Competition, the ECHL Premier
Ice Odyssey Reception, the All-Star Game, and at the All-Star Fan Fest.
The Fresno Falcons are the host for the All-Star Skills Competition on
Tuesday and the 2006 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Bud Light on
Wednesday. Both events will be at Save Mart Center and begin at 7 p.m. PT.
Tickets are still available for the game and the skills competition and can
be purchased at the box office at Save Mart Center which is open
Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased at
select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo
Latino locations.
Tickets can be ordered online at Ticketmaster.com or
by telephone at (559) 458-TIXS (8497).
The oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America,
the Stanley Cup was donated by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston
and son of the Earl of Derby, in 1893. Lord Stanley purchased the trophy
for 10 guineas ($50 at that time) for presentation to amateur hockey
champions of Canada. Since 1910, when the National Hockey League took
possession of the Stanley Cup, the trophy has been the symbol of
professional hockey supremacy. It has been competed for only by NHL teams
since 1926-27 and has been under the exclusive control of the NHL since
1947.
For the fifth consecutive year the ECHL was represented on the Stanley Cup
in 2004 by Tampa Bay's Ruslan Fedotenko, Nolan Pratt and Andre Roy as well
as radio announcer Dave Mishkin and assistant equipment manager Dana
Heinze. The three players are the most ECHL representatives in one year
surpassing 2001 when David Aebischer and Pratt helped Colorado win the
title, and bring the total number of ECHL alumni on the Stanley Cup to
nine. Pratt is the first ECHL player to have his name engraved twice on the
Stanley Cup. The previous alumni whose names are on the Stanley Cup are
Corey Schwab (New Jersey - 2003), Manny Legace (Detroit - 2002), Aebischer
and Pratt (Colorado - 2001), Krzysztof Oliwa (New Jersey - 2000) and Kevin
Dean (New Jersey - 1995).
Named in recognition of Patrick J. Kelly, who is one of the founding
fathers of the ECHL, the Kelly Cup has been awarded to the ECHL champion
since 1997. The Kelly Cup stands 19 3/8 inches tall and weighs 25 3/8
pounds and was created by Boardman Silversmiths, Inc. in Meriden,
Connecticut. Boardman also produces the Calder Cup for the American Hockey
League as well as the U.S. Open Tennis trophy and the Masters trophy. The
Kelly Cup, which was won in 2005 by the Trenton Titans, replaced the Riley
Cup which was awarded from 1989-96.
The Second Annual Kelly Cup Tour was held in the spring of 2005 and the
trophy traveled 7,112 miles in 51 days as it visited 12 cities in eight
states. The inaugural Kelly Cup Tour in the spring of 2004 covered 7,543
miles in 44 days and visited 10 cities in eight states.
The Third Annual Kelly Cup Tour will begin in February and again every team
in the ECHL is being given the opportunity to have the league championship
trophy visit its city.
