Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Fresno Falcons' winger John Wroblewski scored two goals as the visitors recorded five markers over the final two periods, winning 5-2 over the Steelheads in front of a sellout crowd of 5,024 on Saturday night at Qwest Arena.
The Steelheads drop to 22-13-3, while the Falcons improve to 22-7-8, earning their first win of the season against the Steelheads. The rubber match of the series is Sunday, January 22.
For the second straight night, neither team scored in the first stanza.
The Falcons jumped on the board at 8:20 of the second period, netting a power play goal for the 12th consecutive contest. Shawn Mather followed up Cory Murphy's shot, that caromed off the end boards, and slammed the puck past Steelheads goaltender Matt Yeats (16 saves). Falcons' leading scorer Luke Curtin also drew a helper. Fresno tallied again just 98 seconds later, making it 2-0. Peter Fregoe got his 13th of the season, with the assists going to Murphy and defenseman Dustin VanBallegooie.
Steelheads' winger Marty Flichel registered his third point of the series with an even-strength goal at 16:50 of the frame. Paul Caponigri and David Bararuk got the assists on the goal that made it 2-1.
Wroblewski's first of the evening, which came with just 11 seconds left in the second period, turned out to be the game-winner. Yeats kicked out defenseman Shawn Weiman's point shot right onto the stick of Wroblewski, who made no mistake with the rebound to make the score 3-1 at the second intermission.
Just 37 seconds into the third, the Falcons made it 4-1, when Rob McFeeters poked a loose puck past Yeats, giving the visitors a three-goal advantage. Captain Matt O'Dette received the primary assist, while Weiman drew the other helper.
Defenseman Jarad Bourassa's wrister from the left circles got the Steelheads back to within two at 2:49 of the period, but Wroblewski tallied again at 6:15 to essentially ice the contest. Scott Burt and Kurt MacSweyn assisted on Bourassa's goal, while Fregoe and Mather set up Wroblewski's 11th of the year.
The Steelheads out-shot the Falcons 43-21 in the defeat. Falcons' goaltender Brett Jaeger earned the win, stopping a season-high 41 shots for his 15th victory of the season. Yeats (12-5-2) was saddled with the loss. The two teams combined for 16 power play opportunities, with the Steelheads going zero-for-nine.
Sunday's faceoff versus the Falcons at Qwest Arena is at 4:00 p.m MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" beginning approximately 20 minutes prior to the drop of the puck.
