Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Vladimir Novak scored twice for the second time in three games as Alaska broke open a close game with two third period goals in an eventual 5-2 decision over Stockton in front of 5,024 at Sullivan Arena.
The early stages of Friday's game hinted at a repeat of Wednesday's 7-1 Aces romp, as Novak opened the scoring at 6:23 and Cam Keith buried his 12th of the year off the rush three minutes later for a quick 2-0 lead. But Alaska gave up two goals in 25 seconds in the final minute of the period to change the complexion of the game. A turnover led to the first goal, a tip-in by Aaron Foster at 18:56, and shortly thereafter, a seemingly harmless drive from the point by Dave McCulloch squeezed through the pads of Aces goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu, and suddenly, the game was tied 2-2 at the break.
Alaska regained the advantage for good just 20 seconds into the second period, as Alex Leavitt tipped in a Mike Scott slap shot from the high slot. Nathan Martz was awarded a penalty shot early in the final stanza with an opportunity to tie the score, but the puck took a bad hop as he broke in on Beckford-Tseu, and that proved to be the Thunder's last gasp. Novak fired a laser top shelf at the 5:56 mark to push the margin to 4-2, and Joe Talbot scored his 11th goal in 16 games on a power play with 4:27 remaining to cement another home win for the Aces, now 29-6-3 overall and 16-2-1 at Sullivan Arena. Beckford-Tseu, named the starter for the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game in Fresno, Calif., January 25, finished with 21 saves to run his personal mark to 13-1-2.
Alaska looks to complete a three-game sweep of Stockton (6-21-5) tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. All Alaska Aces games, home and away, are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all home games and selected road contests will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
