CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers have been busy on the ice this season but in January, the team will be just as busy off the ice. Players, coaches and front office staff will make their presence felt in the Charlotte community during the entire month.

Jan. 6: The CheckMates and team mascot, Chubby appeared at WBT's Holiday on Ice to sign autographs and interact with fans.

Jan. 7: Players Blake Bellefeuille, Lee Falardeau, Nathan Gillies and Dusty Jamieson will deliver Teddy Bears to Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital. Over 1,000 teddy bears were collected during the Checkers "Teddy Bear Toss" held on Friday, Nov. 23.

Jan. 13: Players will appear at Alexander Youth Network to interact with children at the facility. The Alexander Youth Network is North Carolina's leading provider of children's behavioral healthcare. They provide a comprehensive array of services developed to treat children with, or at risk for, serious emotional disturbance. Services include diagnostic assessment, outpatient therapy, day treatment, psychiatric residential treatment, therapeutic and intensive foster care, community support services, Multi-systemic Therapy, and operate The Relatives, a shelter for runaway and homeless children.

Jan. 16: Players to appear at Alexander Youth Network and Torrance Creek Elementary.

Jan. 19: The entire team and CheckMates will attend Vegas Night benefiting the Regional HIV/AIDS Consortium, an organization dedicated to shelter, training, education, prevention, and services for people living with HIV/AIDS and those who provide care and services for this vulnerable population.

Jan. 23: Checkers head coach and general manager, Derek Wilkinson, will appear at Beef O' Brady's in Baxter Village in Fort Mill, SC. for Coaches Corner at 7 p.m.. Fans are invited to ask coach Wilkinson questions in an open microphone format.

Jan. 27: Players and CheckMates will attend the 4th Annual Tip-A-Checker at Brixx Uptown from 5-9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Charlotte. JDRF is recognized as the largest nonprofit organization for diabetes worldwide. JDRF has allocated more than $1 billion for diabetes research and increasing awareness of the complications from diabetes.

Jan. 28: Checkers president, Jeff Longo will speak at Charlotte's North Rotary Club Luncheon at Byron's in the Design Center located at 101 W. Worthington Avenue.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Jan. 10 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
