Stingrays Win Hard Fought Battle with Ice Pilots 3-2
January 7, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Pensacola, FL - The South Carolina Stingrays looked to get on the winning track tonight against the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center. Goals by Pierre-Luc O'Brien, Cail MacLean and Scott Romfo were enough as they survived a six on four assault in the final moments of the game to win 3-2.
"It definitely wasn't pretty," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But it was a hard fought win. A big win for us tonight, especially with the amount of guys who are hurting right now."
The first period was a back and forth affair that brought chances for both teams, but no goals. It was the second period that brought about the scoring. Bryan Esner gave the Ice Pilots a 1-0 when he scored his tenth goal of the season. But shortly after, O'Brien tied the game up with an unassisted goal at 15:32. The goal was his fourth of the season. Cail MacLean would give the Rays a lead that they would not give up at 17:08 from Travis Morin and Derrick Byfuglien.
In the third period Romfo made it 3-1 on his fourth goal of the year from MacLean and T.J. Sakuluk at 4:16. The Ice Pilots would score again and pull their goaltender with time expiring, but they could not tie the game up, and the Rays walked away with a 3-2 victory.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Cam Ellsworth who stopped 19 of the 22 shots he faced. South Carolina went 0 for 3 on the power play, while killing off all six of the short handed situations they faced. The Stingrays are now 5-0 against Pensacola this season.
The Rays are back in action tomorrow night when they take on Mississippi Sea Wolves, winners of their last four in a row. Game time will be at 8:05 Eastern Time.
