Checkers Receive Waddell And Murphy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers have received defenseman, Matt Waddell and forward, Ryan Murphy after they were released from Professional Tryout Contracts with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

Waddell, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, is a product of Ohio State University. He dressed in five games for the Wolf Pack during his second stint with the team. He has played in 12 total games in the AHL this season with Hartford but hasn't registered a point. In 19 games for the Checkers this year, Waddell has totaled two goals, four assists for six points with 25 penalty minutes.

Murphy, 5-foot-11, 185-pound, has dressed in 11 games with the Checkers this season scoring one goal and six assists for seven points with four penalty minutes. In nine games for the Wolf Pack, he has compiled zero goals and one assist. Murphy was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced that the team has waived Mathew Pierce and placed Kaleb Betts on the three-day injured reserve.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Jan. 10 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
