Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Devils held their ground in the North Division by sweeping through the southern United States, taking two games from Pensacola while battling to an overtime loss against Mississippi. The Devils return home for a small hiatus before taking to the road again, traveling to Dayton and Wheeling as they continue their longest road trip of the season. The Devils are now 14-17-3 on the season, and are in fifth place in the division.
ICE PILOTS GROUNDED: Eric Castonguay scored two goals, including the game winner, leading the Devils over Pensacola 3-1 in the first game between the two teams. Matt Rogers earned Trenton's first penalty shot of the season, and made it count, going topside over Cam Ellsworth to tie the game in the first period and set up Castonguay's winner. Jason Smith was impressive, stopping 34 of 35 shots for the win.
SEA WOLVES SLIP BY: An intense goaltending effort by Ryan Munce foiled the Devils in their first contest with the Mississippi Sea Wolves, as the netminder stopped 29 Trenton shots en route to a 4-1 decision. Andrew Leach scored the lone goal for Trenton 14:11 into the first period, slamming home a puck on the crease after Matt Radoslovich and Bill LeClerc created rebounds off Munce.
PENSACOLA DOWNED: Brad Mills and Jason Smith led the Devils in a strong game on both sides of the ice, defeating the Ice Pilots 3-1. Mills scored a natural hat trick for Trenton, while Smith stopped 41 of 42 shots; only letting in a shorthanded tally. Colin Pepperall and Stephen Wood each had two assists in the win.
MISSISSIPPI DRAW: The Devils played a solid sixty minutes of hockey, forcing overtime, but would ultimately drop in the extra frame 2-1. Ryan Munce stopped 36 of 37 shots to spoil the Devils' efforts yet again, but Colin Pepperall continued his hot streak with his fourth goal of the season 4:58 into the second period. The Devils had multiple quality scoring chances, but just could not find the winning shot into the net.
QUICK HITS: Brad Mills notched his second hat trick of the season 1/5/08 @ PEN... Mills has yet to score a goal that was not part of a hat trick... Jason Smith has a GAA under 1.00 over his past three games... The Devils earned 5 of a possible 8 points on their southern road trip; they are in the midst of their longest road trip of the season... Trenton is 13-0-1-0 when allowing two or fewer goals.
UPCOMING GAMES Friday, January 12, 7:00pm - Devils @ Dayton Bombers
Trenton heads to Dayton for the northern leg of their longest road trip of the season, visiting the Bombers for the first time in two months. The Devils look to take down an opponent which has not fared well in overtime; Dayton has seven losses after regulation. This season Trenton is 2-2-0 against the Bombers, and have won the past two meetings.
Sunday, January 13, 7:05pm - Devils @ Wheeling Nailers
The Devils continue to Wheeling, facing the Nailers in the WesBanco Arena for two big games. Trenton boasts two goaltenders who have been outstanding as of late; Dave Caruso and Jason Smith both have Goals Against Averages under 2.25 over the last ten games.
