South Carolina's Johnson Named RBC Financial Group ECHL Saver Of The Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - South Carolina rookie Josh Johnson is the RBC Financial Group ECHL Saver of the Month for December.

The 6-foot and 170-pound Johnson was 6-0-0 with a shutout, a 1.48 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage as the Stingrays went 10-0-0 during the month to move into fourth place in the South Division.

After stopping 33 shots in a 5-2 win at Pensacola on Dec. 1 and turning aside 14 shots in a 4-2 win against Johnstown on Dec. 9, the Esko, Minn. native recorded his first professional shutout making 31 saves in a 3-0 win against Pensacola on Dec. 21.

Johnson ended the month with three wins in three days, stopping 35 shots in a 5-2 win at Charlotte on Dec. 29, making 23 saves against Gwinnett in a 3-2 win on Dec. 30 and blocking 29-of-30 shots in a 3-1 win against Columbia on Dec. 31.

The 23 year old, who is 10-8-0 with a 3.15 goals-against average and a .896 save percentage in 18 games, has won the ECHL Goaltender of the Week Award twice this season (Nov. 5-11 and Dec. 24-30).

Johnson played four seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he was 22-20-4 with three shutouts, a 2.71 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage in 51 games from 2003-07.

Runners Up: Dov Grumet-Morris, Cincinnati (7-0-1, 1.82 GAA, .930 save pct.) and Jake Moreland, Fresno (6-2-1, 2.74 GAA, .913 save pct.).
