Checkers Get Ready for One Home, One Road Game this Week

The Checkers (2-3-2) go from a long, four-game week to a short week with only two games on the schedule for the coming week. Friday the Checkers will host the Greensboro Generals at Cricket Arena at 7:30 p.m. Saturday Charlotte will head to Charleston, South Carolina to battle the Stingrays at 7:30 p.m. Last week the Checkers went 0-2-2 in a busy and injury-filled week. Defenseman Dan Preston and center Allan Egeland went down with injuries, and their return status is still being determined today after further medical evaluation.

FRIDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will host the Greensboro Generals in the first of eight matches during the season, and first of four at Cricket Arena. The Generals enter the week with a record of 4-3-0 for eight points, and are tied for third place in the Southern Division of the Eastern Conference. After missing the playoffs for three straight seasons Greensboro, under first-year coach Rick Adduono, made a dramatic improvement last season with a 42-21-9 record for 93 points and a playoff berth. The Generals are once again led by veteran goaltender Daniel Berthiaume who has started the season with a 4-2-0 record and 3.55 GAA. Eric Fortier, Matt Turek and Mark Turner all lead Greensboro in scoring with nine points each.

2003-04 VS. SOUTH CAROLINA (0-0-0 = 0 PTS) - SEVEN-GAME SEASON SERIES OVERALL - 0-0-0 HOME - 0-0-0 AWAY - 0-0-0 LIFETIME VS. SOUTH CAROLINA - 31-33-7

Charlotte will play the Stingrays in the first of seven meetings between the two teams, and first of three in Charleston. The Checkers met the Stingrays in a preseason game on October 9, dropping a 4-3 decision. Last season the Checkers were a perfect 3-0 in games at the North Charleston Coliseum. South Carolina enters the week on a two-game losing streak and an overall record of 3-3-0 for six points. The Stingrays are tied with the Checkers for sixth place in the Southern Division. South Carolina's scoring leaders are Kevin Spiewak and Dave Seitz, both with five points. The Stingrays have veteran goalies Kirk Daubenspeck and David Brumby.

NEWS AND NOTES:

· Rookie defenseman Rory Rawlyk scored his first professional goal, a power- play goal, in Saturday night's 4-3 OT loss at Columbia.

· Charlotte is 26th in the ECHL on the power play, and 20th in the ECHL on the penalty kill.

· Both Checkers goalies have save percentages above .900. David St. Germain ended the week at .932 while Scott Meyer ended the week at .912.

· Left wing Dusty Jamieson (3-3-6) and center Allan Egeland (2-4-6) lead the Checkers in scoring, each with six points.

· The Checkers have the second fewest penalty minutes (106) in the 31-team ECHL. Only Greenville (104) has fewer pims. Charlotte had the fewest minutes per game at 15.1.

· The Checkers have outscored their opponents in the first two periods of games so far (6-3 - 1st), (7-4 - 2nd), but have been outscored 15-5 in the third period.

· The Checkers are tied for second in the ECHL in short-handed goals with two.
