Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: The BEARS played a two game weekend set with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Philadelphia. Saturday night, HERSHEY rallied to tie the game late in the third period on a goal by Brett Clark, but the Penguins won the game in overtime with a goal by Tom Kostopoulos. Sunday, the BEARS scored just 18 seconds into the game when Sheldon Keefe scored on his first shift of the game, but Philadelphia scored the next six goals to cruise to a 6-2 victory. Peter Budaj suffered the loss Sunday. Brett Clark scored his second goal in as many nights with a power play tally in the third period. The BEARS begin the week with a 6-2-1-1 record, good for second place in the AHL's East Division. HERSHEY is just one point back of the Binghamton Senators, but only one point in front of third place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a tight race at the top of the standings.

Notables: The goal for Sheldon Keefe was his first of the season, and first as a Bear. Sunday's game with Philadelphia featured the most penalty minutes in a HERSHEY game this season, with 82 minutes worth dished out by referee Tom Kowal. Five different BEARS players remain on recall to the Colorado Avalanche as the week begins. Charlie Stephens, Steve Moore, D.J. Smith, Brad Larsen and Travis Brigley remain with the NHL club. Brigley scored his first goal for the Avalanche Sunday night in a Colorado 3-2 win over the New York Rangers. Larsen is currently sidelined due to injury. With Saturday's 3-2 overtime setback against Wilkes Barre/Scranton, the BEARS have earned points in three games this season when trailing after two periods.

Colorado Update: The Avalanche improved to one game over the .500 mark with a 3-2 come from behind victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Sunday night. Colorado begins the week with a 6-5-0-0 record. The Avalanche play three games this week, beginning with a date at Pepsi Center tomorrow night with the Minnesota Wild. Colorado also plays at home Thursday night against Phoenix and Sunday night on the road at Chicago. Forward Steve Moore has averaged nearly 15 minutes of ice time a game since his recall to the Avalanche. Charlie Stephens has averaged nearly nine minutes a game since his recall last Tuesday.

Tampa Bay Update: The Lightning continue to be the hottest team in the NHL out of the gate in 2003-04, beginning the week as the only unbeaten team in the league. Tampa Bay's record stands at 7-0-1-0 through eight games. The Lightning have a busy week ahead, with three home games between now and Saturday. The Bolts will play host to the Washington Capitals tomorrow, with the San Jose Sharks invading the St. Pete Times Forum Thursday. Tampa will then host Pittsburgh on Saturday before traveling to Carolina for a game with the Hurricanes on Sunday. Cory Stillman leads the team in goals with six entering this week's action. Stillman and Martin St. Louis are tied for the team lead in points with nine.
