Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
vs. Lowell (11/1): Right wing Scott Barney led the way with two goals as the Manchester Monarchs won for the second straight time, topping the Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-3, on Saturday night before a near sellout crowd of 9,682 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Center Steve Kelly, left wing Noah Clarke and center Yanick Lehoux also scored for the Monarchs. Goaltender Matt Underhill was credited with his first Monarchs win, finishing with 38 saves. Kelly finished with three points (1-2=3).
vs. Norfolk (11/2): Right wing Scott Barney's two goals and goaltender Adam Hauser's 29 saves propelled the Manchester Monarchs to their third straight win, a 5-0 triumph over the Norfolk Admirals, before a Verizon Wireless Arena crowd of 7,094 on Sunday afternoon. Center Steve Kelly added another three points (1-2=3) in the win. Right wing Pavel Rosa also chipped in with three points (0-3=3). Hauser improved to 2-0 on the season with his second consecutive shutout. Including last season, he is 2-0-1 in three career AHL starts with a 0.98 goals-against-average and a .996 save-percentage.
TEAM NOTES
Right wing Scott Barney has five points (1-4=5) in his last three games. His current three-game scoring streak matches the longest of his career. Barney twice had three-game scoring streaks while skating with the Monarchs during the 2002-03 season.
Barney, who finished second on the Monarchs with seven game-winning goals last season, leads this year's club with two game-winning goals. Nine of his 17 career AHL goals have been game-winners.
Barney last week posted consecutive multi-goal games for the first time in his AHL career. He had just one prior multi-goal effort in the AHL, collecting two goals at Lowell against the Lock Monsters on December 15, 2002.
Barney is one of 10 players in the league to score two power play goals in one game this season. He netted his pair of power play goals on Sunday against the Norfolk Admirals.
With his plus-3 weekend, Barney now shares the team plus/minus lead with center Steve Kelly and defenseman Richard Seeley. All three have a plus-6 rating.
Goaltender Adam Hauser improved to 2-0 on the season with his second consecutive shutout as he made 29 saves in the Monarchs 5-0 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday. Including last season, Hauser is 2-0-1 in three career AHL starts with a 0.98 goals-against-average and a .996 save-percentage. Hauser began the season with the Monarchs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, posting a 3-0-1 record with a 1.71 goals-against-average and a .930 save-percentage.
The Monarchs named Seeley their captain for the 2003-04 season last weekend. Seeley, in his third season with the Monarchs and his fifth season in the Los Angeles Kings system, is the second Monarchs player to wear the coveted "C." Former right wing and current Assistant Coach Dane Jackson served as the Monarchs captain the two previous seasons.
Seeley appeared in his 141st Monarchs game on Sunday, surpassing former left wing Eric Healey (140) as the Monarchs all-time games played leader.
Rookie defenseman Denis Grebeshkov collected his first AHL goal in Sunday's game.
Left wing Noah Clarke leads all Monarchs rookies with nine points (2-7=9) in 10 games. He also has a plus-2 rating. Clarke has points in six of his last seven games, totaling eight points (2-6=8) during the hot streak.
The Monarchs rank second in AHL attendance with an average of 8,348 fans after six dates. The Toronto Roadrunners, who debuted on Saturday at the Ricoh Coliseum after beginning the season with nine straight road games, lead the league with an average of 8,440 after two dates.
The Monarchs have scored more goals (33), collected more assists (57) and scored more points (90) than any other team in the league.
Manchester and Bridgeport, each winners of three straight, share the league lead for longest current winning streak.
Defenseman Bryan Muir leads all AHL defensemen with five goals and 12 points. His seven assists rank second best among league blue-liners.
Right Wing Pavel Rosa and Norfolk defenseman Marty Wilford share the league lead in assists with nine each. Kelly (8) and Muir (7) rank second and fifth in the league in assists.
Rosa also leads the league with 51 shots on goal, followed closely by right wing John Tripp. Tripp's 47 shots are the second highest total in the league. Muir ranks fifth in the league with 43 shots on goal.
