Milwaukee Admirals News Release
THE WEEK AHEAD...The Admirals embark on a two game Texas road trip beginning Thursday against the Calder Cup Champion Houston Aeros and then bus to San Antonio to battle the Rampage on Friday night.
It's the second of ten meetings between the Admirals and the Aeros and the first of five in Houston. It will also mark the first time Milwaukee will play in the Aeros new home, the Toyota Center. The Aeros defeated the Admirals 5-1 at the Bradley Center on October 17th. Last season, Milwaukee was 4-4-1-1 versus Houston, but were swept by the Aeros 3-0 in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. All-time, the Admirals are 24-20-1-6 against Houston with a 13-10-0-2 home mark. In the 51 games played between the two teams, 38 have ended in ties or one or two goal decisions. The Admirals are 17-14-1-6 in those squeakers.
Friday will be the first of ten 2003-04 meetings for the Admirals and Rampage. Last season Milwaukee was 5-3-2 against the Rampage, but only 1-3-1 in San Antonio. The only Admirals' win during the 2002-03 season was a 6-4 triumph on March 28, 2003. The Admirals outscored the Rampage 33-28 overall, but San Antonio outscored the Admirals 22-15 at the SBC Center.
LAST WEEK'S ACTION: The Admirals (3-1-3-1) picked up four of a possible six points, including at least one point in all three games. Milwaukee has garnered at least one point in five consecutive games. On Friday night versus Syracuse, Timofei Shishkanov's tally at 12:22 of the third period gave the Admirals the only goal they needed. Brian Finley blanked the Crunch with 19 saves.
DOING 65 IN A 60...Four of the Admirals first eight games have been forced into an extra session. Milwaukee is 0-1-3 in the OT tilts with the lone loss coming in St.John's, Newfoundland Tuesday night.
HEAD OF THE CLASS...Center Greg Classen notched the team's first power play goal 10/23 and now leads the team in scoring with eight points (3g-5a). The former Merrimack College center also leads the team in assists (5) and multiple point games (2).
MINDING THE MESH... Brian Finley has played six of the team's first eight games. Finley boasts an impressive .919 save percentage to go along with his 2-2-2 record and a 2.41 goals against average. Last year, Finley posted two shutouts in his rookie season as he went 7-11-2 with a 2.93 GAA and .893 save percentage in 22 games with Milwaukee. He also made his NHL debut with the Nashville Predators on New Year's Day against Colorado. Wade Flaherty has notched a 1-0-1 record in two appearances this season. His clutch netminding Wednesday helped the Admirals gain a road tie with St.John's. Flaherty made 31 saves and was tested often from point-blank range. He made 22 saves in his Admirals' debut 10/23, defeating Cincinnati 5-3 in the process
FARRELL POINTS ADMIRALS IN RIGHT DIRECTION... The Admirals' two points on the road this week were earned thanks to third period heroics by right wing Mike Farrell. The former Portland Pirate scored the game-tying goal late in the third period Tuesday in the team's 3-2 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs. On Wednesday night his unassisted effort pulled the Admirals even in their 2-2 tie against St.John's. Farrell has played on both defense and on the wing this season and is tied for the team lead with three goals scored.
DEMONS EXORCISED...Friday's victory over Syracuse marked the first Admirals' win on Halloween since 1986. All-time Milwaukee is 4-4-0-2 on Oct. 31 games.
