Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers and Extreme Ice Center today announced the launch of the "Mini Checkers" program. The joint effort is designed to provide comprehensive and affordable first steps for kids 8 years old and younger that are looking to begin playing hockey.

The new partnership will begin for the fall season at Extreme Ice Center, which will see the existing 6U and 8U programs rebranded as Mini Checkers teams. Each player in these programs, which begin in September, will receive a Mini Checkers jersey to keep.

"In trying to introduce more kids to hockey, we understand that the process of deciding where and how to begin can be difficult," said Charlotte Checkers COO Tera Black. "In creating the Mini Checkers program, we hope to provide a clear path for kids to get started and, most importantly, continue playing for years to come."

Players entering the Mini Checkers program are required to have some skating or playing experience. For those without such experience, the Carolina Hurricanes' First Goal program, which provides all participants ages 5-9 with a full set of hockey gear to keep and six on-ice instructional sessions, will return for two sessions in Charlotte beginning this summer - one at Bojangles' Coliseum (dates TBD) and another at Extreme Ice Center (July 11-Aug. 22).

Those who complete the First Goal program will receive a recommendation from Extreme Ice Center staff on advancing to the 6U or 8U Mini Checkers teams or another learn to play program.

Registration for these programs will open in the coming months. The Checkers and Extreme Ice Center have created a mailing list that those interested in the program can join in order to receive more information as it becomes available.
