(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, February 11) - The Checkers continue to let the rest of the ECHL's Southern Division that they are in the hunt for a playoff berth for the long haul. The Checkers won three of four games last week to help them close in on the leaders in the Southern Division. As of today, the Checkers trail fourth place South Carolina by only two points, and are just three points behind third place Florida and five points behind second place Greensboro. The top four teams in the Southern Division make the playoffs.

FRIDAY'S & SATURDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will close out the seven-game season series with the Stingrays with two games this week, one away and one at home. Charlotte snapped a three-game losing steak in the series in their last game against the Rays on Tuesday, February 3, with a 6-1 win at Cricket Arena. The Stingrays are all alone in fourth place in the Southern Division with a record of 27-16-2. The Rays have multiple games in hand on every other team in the division. South Carolina is 6-3-1 in their last ten games and is 14-9-0 at home and 13-7-2 on the road. Offensively the team is ranked 19th averaging 2.89 goals per game. The Rays power play is ranked 11th in the league at 18.5%.

SUNDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will close out their three-game week Sunday afternoon against Roanoke at Cricket Arena. In the last meeting the Checkers shut out the Express 3-0 last Saturday night at home. The Express is currently in the midst of its longest road trip of the season. The 10-game trip began on January 28 and concludes on February 15. Roanoke is 1-3-3 on the road trip so far. The Express enters this week ranked 14th on the power play (17.1%) and ranked 15th on the penalty kill (83.7%). Today Roanoke traded defenseman Tim OConnell to the Florida Everblades for forward Carl Mallette and defenseman Kevin Holdridge.

NEWS AND NOTES:

• Checkers went 3-1-0 last week.

• The Checkers are 5-1-1 under new Head Coach Derek Wilkinson since he took over Jan 29

• Charlotte is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games.

• Rookie right Mike Wirll had his ECHL-leading six-game goal scoring streak (eight goals) snapped in Sunday afternoon's 4-1 win over Augusta. Wirll does have a seven-game point scoring streak alive 7g, 3a = 10 pts in that span.

• Center Richard Keyes has a six-game point streak alive going 4g, 9a, = 14 points in that span.

• Goalie Scott Meyer has won his last four starts with a 1.00GAA and a .963 save percentage.

• Charlotte is in fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference, just two points behind fourth place South Carolina for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division. The Checkers are only three points behind second place Greensboro and Florida.

• The Checkers are 25th on the power play at 14.9% while 5th on the penalty kill at 87.0%.
