(Columbia, South Carolina) At the expense of the Charlotte Checkers, the Columbia Inferno snapped its fifteen-game winless streak (0-13-2) with a 3-1 victory Friday night at home at the Carolina Coliseum. The Inferno built a two-goal lead after two periods on goals by Dallas Flaman and Travis Lisabeth, and rode of the fine play of National Hockey League goalie Jani Herme who made 34 saves. Herme was assigned on Friday to the Inferno from the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers.

The Checkers lone goal was scored by Peter Worrell. Derek Campbell also connected for Columbia. The loss by the Checkers snapped their four-game unbeaten streak at 3-0-1. Charlotte goalie Chris Holt took the loss with 35 saves.

"The difference in the game tonight was goaltending," remarked Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "Their first and third goals were ones we should have stopped, and Herme was very solid in goal for them. This is definitely a game that we could have won."

After a scoreless first period, the Inferno put two on the board in the second period for a 2-0 advantage after 40 minutes. Flaman wristed in his own rebound at 8:45 to break the scoreless tie and give Columbia a 1-0 lead. With Steve MacIntyre in the penalty box, Lisabeth broke in alone on Holt for a breakaway and notched his 13th goal of the season at 10:29 for a 2-0 Columbia advantage.

In the third period the Checkers cut the lead to one at 2-1 when Worrell cleaned up a loose puck at the side of the Columbia goal at 5:20. But the Inferno came right back less than a minute later as Holt could not hold Campbell's shot in his glove, and the Columbia forward knocked in his own rebound for a 3-1 lead and final.

The Checkers record dropped to 21-17-4 for 46 points, while the Inferno raised its record to 14-23-5 for 33 points. Charlotte is home Saturday night at Charlotte Bobcats Arena to host the Toledo Storm at 7:00 p.m.
