Cats Score Early, Often in 20-5 Win

TUCSON, Ariz. - Sacramento sent 15 men to the plate in the first inning-scoring 10 times-and coasted to a 20-5 win over the Tucson Padres Sunday night at Kino Stadium.
In the top of the first inning, the River Cats pounded out nine hits-including two home runs-and drew four walks, staking starter Sonny Gray a 10-run lead before he threw a pitch. Michael Taylor hit a grand slam and Hiro Nakajima hit a three-run homer in the first frame, during which the Cats tied a season high for runs in an inning. Every River Cats starter scored at least one run in the inning.
The River Cats weren't finished, however, scoring 10 more times throughout the game to win their seventh-straight road game and fourth-straight game overall. The seven road victories in a row is one shy of a franchise record.
Scott Moore followed up his five-hit night on Saturday with a 3-for-5 effort on Sunday. He scored four times and hit a solo home run-his third homer in the last two games-and was one of seven River Cats hitters with at least two hits. Andy Parrino and Grant Green each had four-hit nights for the Cats, who set a new season high with 23 hits in the game. The 23 hits fell one shy of the franchise record, set on May 9, 2005, at Las Vegas.
Gray (5-2) picked up the win, striking out nine without issuing a walk. He allowed just one earned run, spinning his sixth-straight quality start for Sacramento.
The loss fell to Padres starter Jorge Reyes (3-1), who gave up eight earned runs without escaping the first inning.
The River Cats look for the series sweep on Monday night at Kino Stadium, with LHP Andrew Werner (4-6, 6.20 ERA) set to pitch against Padres LHP Robbie Erlin (3-0, 4.59 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. PT.
The River Cats return home Tuesday, May 28, for a four-game set against the Salt Lake Bees. First pitch for Tuesday's series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Raley Field.
