Today's Game: The RedHawks finish their 13-game road trip with a Memorial Day matinee against the Iowa Cubs at 1:05 p.m. Yesterday the RedHawks were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since July 21, 2011, losing a pair of one-run games. Today is their final game at Principal Park in Des Moines, where they have gone 1-6 so far after posting a 5-3 record in 2012.
Yesterday: The I-Cubs swept a doubleheader, thanks in large part to a couple of clutch home runs. Iowa took game one, 2-1. Tied at one run apiece in the fifth, Edwin Maysonet belted a home run that proved to be the difference. In the second game, the I-Cubs jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning, but the RedHawks overcame the deficit and eventually tied the game on a wild pitch in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Donnie Murphy sent a ball just over the extended fence in left field for what would be the game-winning hit as Iowa won, 4-3. The RedHawks were held to a season-low three hits in each game and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The pitching staff put the team position to win in each game, allowing four earned runs over both games.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Following his first Triple-A win, Ross Seaton will look to play stopper...On Wednesday in Fresno, Seaton turned in his first quality start of the season to notch his first win in a RedHawks uniform. He allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits with three walks and three strikeouts over a season-high six innings. The victory came in his 12 appearance in 11th start with the RedHawks...Seaton squared off against the I-Cubs three weeks ago today at Principal Park, taking a loss after allowing four runs and eight hits over five innings. He finished strong, retiring nine of the last 10 hitters he faced and set a season high with six strikeouts.
Against the Cubs: 2013: 1-6 2012: 12-4 All-time: 99-113 In Iowa: 46-64
Iowa has already won two more games than it did in all of 2012 against the RedHawks...The RedHawks have dropped five straight games to Iowa for the first time since a six-game losing streak between Aug. 27-30, 2009 and May 7, 2010. That streak included a sweep in a five-game series at Principal Park, something the RedHawks will look to avoid today...After not winning any of its previous six series against the RedHawks, the I-Cubs have won both of the teams' series this year...The RedHawks have been held to just 18 runs over the first seven games...Former RedHawk Brian Bogusevic is 11-for-21 and has reached base in 17 of 27 plate appearances...Edwin Maysonet is 8-for-17 with three home runs and seven RBI. (One HR, 10 RBI in 26 G against the rest of the PCL.)
Big 12 Big Trip: Today is the final day of the RedHawks annual 12-day road trip while the Big 12 Baseball Championship takes place at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Yesterday Oklahoma defeated Kansas, 7-2, to claim the Big 12 title. The RedHawks are 4-8 on the trip and have lost eight of 11 games after winning their first contest in Sacramento.
Breaking Brooms: The RedHawks have yet to be swept this season. They have won the final game of a series to prevent a sweep twice this season, both in series at home. The last time the RedHawks were swept was Aug. 10-13, 2012 against Sacramento, and the last time they were swept on the road was right before that, Aug. 5-8, 2012 in Salt Lake.
Tumbling Since Tacoma: After finishing a sweep of the Tacoma Rainiers on May 10, the RedHawks have gone 5-11.
Root of the Problem: During the current five-game losing streak, the RedHawks are hitting .194. They have totaled 12 runs and have been held to three runs or less four times.
Wally World: Brett Wallace has collected 14 RBI over the first 12 games of the road trip. Although he did not join the team until April 21, Wallace is now tied for the team lead with eight home runs and ranks second with 27 RBI, just three behind team-leader Marc Krauss. Since he began PCL play, he has third-most homers and is tied for the fifth-most RBI in the league.
Walk This Way: The RedHawks had more walks (7) than hits (6) yesterday and have drawn 20 walks over the first four games of this series. They rank third in the league with 202 walks but boast the second-best walk-to-strikeout ratio (0.58). Che-Hsuan Lin has 27 walks, yet has only struck out 21 times this season.
At Your Own RISP: After Iowa went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position Saturday, the RedHawks returned to their recent form and held the I-Cubs to a 1-for-8 mark during the doubleheader. Opponents have hit .192 (29-for-151) with runners in scoring position over the last 18 games. On offense, the team is 1-for-25 with runners in scoring position this series and 0 for their last 22. Over the last seven chances the RedHawks have had a runner at third with less than two outs, they have not scored four times.
Dinger Details: The RedHawks pitching staff has tied a season high by allowing at least one home run in five consecutive games. Opponents have gone deep seven times during this stretch and the RedHawks have allowed over a quarter of their home run total for the season over the past two series (11 of 39). Logan Watkins' leadoff home run yesterday was the first by a RedHawks opponent since Round Rock's Julio Borbon did it on Aug. 19, 2012 at the Dell Diamond.
Close Calls: Three of the four losses in this series have come by one run, and the RedHawks are now 6-6 in one-run games this season. Last year they had the best winning percentage in the PCL in one-run affairs (.609, 28-18).
Closing Arugments: The RedHawks are 9-3 in series finales this season, including a 3-3 record on the road. They not lost consecutive series finales this year (lost finale in previous series in Fresno).
