RedHawks Snap Skid With 4-3 Win

Des Moines, Iowa - The Oklahoma City RedHawks scored four times in the third inning and made it hold up as they defeated the Iowa Cubs 4-3 before 4,476 Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak both overall and against the I-Cubs. The team finished their 13-game road trip with a 5-8 record. Three of the five games during the series in Des Moines were decided by just one run.

The RedHawks (28-23) were able to break out of their series-long slump with four runs in the third inning, matching their entire output from Sunday's doubleheader. Cody Clark led off the inning with a single, and Andy Simunic and Jonathan Villar each followed with bunt singles to load the bases.

Jake Elmore drew a walk to bring home the game's first run. Brett Wallace then singled home another, and an error on the play by Iowa second baseman Logan Watkins allowed Villar to score and make it 3-0. The final run of the inning scored on a double play.

Iowa (23-26) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, manufacturing a run after a Brian Bogusevic double. Bogusevic eventually scored on a sac fly by Darnell McDonald to cut the RedHawks lead to 4-1.

The I-Cubs edged closer on a controversial home run by Brent Lillibridge in the bottom the fifth. Lillibridge sent a deep drive that appeared to go off the line yellow line atop the fence in left-center field and the ricochet back into play.

RedHawks manager Tony DeFancesco argued the call and was subsequently ejected. It was the first time a RedHawks player or coach was tossed this season.

Iowa inched closer with another run in the sixth. Dave Sappelt hit a sac fly and the I-Cubs proceeded to load the bases with two outs. Alex Sogard got the RedHawks out of the jam by striking out Lillibridge to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the I-Cubs again put the tying run at third base with two outs, but Che-Hsuan Lin made a great sliding catch in center field to end the inning.

There was little drama thereafter, as Rhiner Cruz and Jose Valdez retired all six I-Cubs hitters over the eight and ninth innings. Valdez struck out Ian Stewart to end the game and earn his 10th save.

Ross Seaton pitched the first 5.1 innings for the RedHawks and has now notched wins in back-to-back starts. Seaton (2-4) allowed three runs on just three hits and two walks. He struck out one.

The three hits by Iowa for the game is tied the second-lowest output by a RedHawks opponent this season.

Iowa starting pitcher Guillermo Moscoso labored through five innings and took the loss. The former RedHawk threw 100 pitches and allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits. Moscoso (2-2) struck out six and walked four.
