ROUND ROCK, Texas - Scott Moore of the Sacramento River Cats and Martin Perez of the Round Rock Express put up some of the top marks in the Pacific Coast League last week, and today they were named the PCL Player and Pitcher of the Week from May 20th to 26th as a result of their performances.
Moore had an outstanding week at the plate batting .455 with three home runs and seven RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .556 and slugged 1.419 in six games for Sacramento in helping them to five wins during the week, in which they extending their lead in the Pacific Southern Division to 2 ½ games. The third baseman went 5-for-6 with 2 home runs and four RBI on Saturday, May 25th against the Tucson Padres.
Moore, from Long Beach, California, was selected in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2002 Major League draft by the Detroit Tigers. After being traded, he made his Major League debut in September 2006 as a member of the Chicago Cubs. He was signed to a minor league contract by the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2013 season. Moore is currently hitting .297 with seven home runs and 34 RBI for the River Cats.
Perez put together a strong seven-inning start, holding Reno scoreless on May 21st while allowing only three hits and no walks, striking out seven in the win. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 3.00 in two starts (1-1) with the Express after being called up from the Texas Rangers Double-A affiliate, the Frisco Rough Riders.
A Guanare, Venezuela native, Perez was signed as a non-drafted free-agent by the Rangers in 2007. He made his Major League debut on June 27th last year as a reliever and earned his first win three days later as a starter in a 7-2 victory against Oakland. He pitched 5 2/3 innings while only giving up two runs to go along with five strikeouts. Perez is ranked as the Rangers top pitching prospect by Baseball America.
