Castro's Hitting Streak Snapped, Isotopes Drop Opener at Omaha
June 9, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Daniel Castro went hitless at the plate Friday, snapping his hitting streak at 24 games as the Isotopes (31-30) fell in the series opener to the Omaha Storm Chasers (27-33), 16-5, at Werner Park.
Castro went 0-for-4 on the night with a walk to end his streak. The streak started on April 6 at Salt Lake and lasted 22 games until he was called up to the Rockies on May 1. The infielder rejoined Albuquerque on Wednesday and hit safely in his first two games back before going hitless Friday. The 24-game hitting streak is tied with Dustin Garneau's (Aug. 20, 2016-June 19, 2017) for the second longest in Isotopes history.
There is still a chance for the hitting streak to reach 25 games if Castro records a hit in the resumption of the suspended game from June 3 vs. Fresno. That game is scheduled to resume on Saturday, July 21 at Isotopes Park, but all statistics for the contest will be recorded as happening on June 3. Conversely, if Castro plays in the game and does not record a hit the streak would officially end at 22 games.
Castro was one of two Isotopes to go hitless Friday, but Albuquerque still collected 14 hits on the evening. Garrett Hampson and Josh Fuentes both had three-hit games while Tom Murphy launched his team-leading 15th home run of the season.
The 16 runs allowed by the Isotopes pitching staff was tied for the most they have surrendered in a single-game this year. David Holman took the loss yielding five runs in 2.1 innings. The right-hander was making his first start of the season as well as his first in affiliated baseball since 2014.
Albuquerque and Omaha will be back in action Saturday night for a food fight at Werner Park as the two teams will take on their food monikers. The Isotopes will be playing as the Green Chile Cheeseburgers for the second time in team history while Omaha will be debuting as the Runzas, a Nebraskan stuffed beef sandwich delicacy. First pitch from Papillion is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
