Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Four earned runs in the first was all the El Paso Chihuahuas (30-32) could muster, but all they needed to pull out a 4-3 victory against the I-Cubs (23-36) Friday night at Principal Park.
After a shaky first inning of four earned runs, Duane Underwood Jr. settled in and cruised for four frames. The righty retired four-straight as he found swing-and miss stuff in the second, but would be tagged for the loss.
With the bases loaded after back-to-back singles by Taylor Davis and Bijan Rademacher, Chesny Young ignited the offense with a two RBI single up the middle to post a crooked number in the bottom of the second.
The I-Cubs would continue to move the line through seven more frames, but would be plagued by missed opportunities-leaving 11 men on base and going 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Young highlighted the offensive effort going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, as seven of eight I-Cubs tagged El Paso for a hit.
A high pitch count kept Underwood Jr. from getting past the fifth, as left-hander Alberto Baldonado relieved the righty. Underwood Jr. ended his night matching a career-high 10 strikeouts with three hits and four earned runs and walks a-piece.
The score stayed locked at 4-2 until the fifth, when Victor Caratini roped an RBI single down the right field line to put the Cubs within a run of a tied game. His RBI on the night would be the last for Iowa, as the El Paso bullpen was able to escape several late-inning threats.
A Chihuahua would not register another hit from the first inning until the sixth, when Auston Bousfield singled for Baldonado's lone surrendered knock of the game. The lefty combined with right-handers Anthony Bass and Dillon Maples to throw four scoreless innings, while giving up just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in relief.
The Iowa offense ended the night out hitting El Paso 8-4, as Davis was the lone I-Cub to reach base on a fielding error in the ninth.
Iowa and El Paso square off in the second of a four-game set tomorrow, at 7:08 at Principal Park. Saturday promotions include, Cancer Survivor Day, Sun Safety Day, ALS Ball Auction and pre-game catch on the field. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
