Reno Aces Game Notes at Memphis

June 9, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Anthony Vasquez enters tonight's contest looking for his first win in exactly one month. The left-hander from San Antonio, Texas is 3-2 this season with a 4.35 ERA. Ildemaro Vargas has hit safely in nine consecutive games and has reached base in each of his last 14 games. With the win last night, Reno is 24-13 all-time against the reigning Pacific Coast League Champions.

Last Game: Taylor Clarke was back in action for the Aces and seemingly didn't miss a beat after a week off. The right-hander was dominant in game one against the Redbirds. Clarke went 6.1 IP, allowed just three hits and added seven strikeouts. Relievers Jake Barrett (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, W) and Braden Shipley (1.0 IP, 1 H, S) solidified the defense and gave Reno the 3-1 victory. Offensively, Christian Walker's three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning was the Aces entire offense and more than enough on Friday night. Shipley's save was the first of his career (college or professional).

On this Day in Baseball History: On this day in 2010, the Diamondbacks beat Atlanta, 2-1, thanks to a bizarre two-run inside-the-park homer hit by Gerrado Parra in the eighth inning of the Chase Field contest. The decisive runs score when Nate McLouth and Jason Heyward violently collide after sprinting into the gap in left-center field trying to make the play. Para played nine games for Reno in 2010 batting .417 (15-for-36) and had 22 total bases.

Christian being Christian: Christian Walker, the reigning Pacific Coast League MVP, hit his first home run since May 23 last night in Memphis. With a 2-1 count, down by one in the top of the eighth inning, Walker connected on a Hector Mendoza curveball to give Reno a 3-1 advantage. Walker has hit four home runs this season and now has 36 in his Aces career. Last season, Walker hit 32 home runs in Reno with 114 RBI earning mid-season and post-season honors.

Gone Streaking: With a 2-for-4 performance last night, Ildemaro Vargas has hit safely in nine consecutive games. Over that nine-game stretch, Vargas is 15-for-38 (.395) with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI. In addition, Vargas has reached base in 14 consecutive games (21-for-64, 3 BB, 7 RBI). Last season, Vargas' longest hitting streak was 13 games from May 9th through May 22nd. During that streak, Vargas recorded 20 hits and had seven doubles.

Going Up: Reno 1868 FC midfielder Kevin Partida was signed by Reno's Major League Soccer affiliate, the San Jose Earthquakes, to a season-long loan Saturday. Partida, a Sparks, Nevada native, joins San Jose after spending a majority of the season with Reno 1868 FC. He becomes the fifth Reno player to join the MLS ranks in less than two seasons joining Dane Kelly (D.C. United), Luis Felipe (Earthquakes), Jimmy Ockford (Earthquakes) and Chris Wehan (Earthquakes).

Faster than Most: Last night's game was played in two hours and 38 minutes. Reno has played 17 games in 2018 in less than 2:40 - 5 in April | 10 in May | 2 in June. The shortest game the Aces have played this year was 2:03 on May 15 in El Paso. The Aces are 7-8 in these contests. Last season, Reno's fastest game was played on 5/23 @ Oklahoma City in 2 hours and 21 minutes.
