Cantillo Shines In Stellar Start

Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Joey Cantillo turned in a sterling start for the TinCaps, but the Quad Cities River Bandits (Houston Astros affiliate) held Fort Wayne scoreless all night long, taking the first game of a three-game weekend series at Parkview Field, 2-0.
The River Bandits (16-10) threatened with two outs in the second, but could not score. After consecutive strikeouts by Joey Cantillo to start the frame, two walks and a single loaded the bags. Cantillo, the 19-year-old native of Hawaii, bore down and struck out Ross Adolph swinging to extinguish the threat.
Fort Wayne (12-15) nearly opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases with two outs. Agustin Ruiz came to the plate hoping to break the scoreless tie, but Matt Ruppenthal struck him out swinging on three pitches to leave the bases loaded.
The starting pitching for both teams was outstanding. Ruppenthal, a 17th round pick in 2017 out of Vanderbilt, went four scoreless innings for the River Bandits, allowing just one hit while striking out four.
Cantillo was even better for the TinCaps. The left-hander tossed five scoreless innings, striking out eight batters while surrendering just two hits and two walks. The outing matched a season-high in strikeouts for Cantillo - he also struck out eight batters in a start at Lansing on April 6.
Quad Cities finally opened the scoring in the top of the sixth inning. Enmanuel Valdez singled with two outs, followed by a two-run home run by Scott Schreiber to left-center field that provided the eventual winning runs. Schrieber, the former Nebraska Cornhusker, leads the River Bandits with three home runs this season.
Fort Wayne's best chance to score came in the eighth when Xavier Edwards singled and Tucupita Marcano doubled to lead off the inning, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Yet, the next three TinCaps were retired in order by Humberto Castellanos to leave Edwards and Marcano stranded in scoring position.
