
Bubba Bell to Participate in Home Run Derby

Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' outfielder Bubba Bell has been selected to participate in the Irving Oil Home Run Derby. Bell replaces Binghamton Mets first basemen, Nick Evans, who was called up to the New York Mets. The Irving Oil Home Run Derby is part of the 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star game festivities and is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 16 at Merchantautos.com Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire. Bell is one of six All-Stars selected from both the Northern and Southern Divisions of the Eastern League in the home run derby challenge.
Bell will join two other Northern Division All-Stars, New Hampshire Fisher Cats outfielder Travis Snider, and Luke Hughes, third basemen for the New Britain Rock Cats. The Southern Division representatives include Dusty Ryan, Erie SeaWolves catcher and two members of the Bowie Baysox; outfielder Lou Montanez and third basemen Jeff Nettles.
Six lucky fans that entered the Irving Oil Home Run Derby contest at Fisher Cats' home games this season will be randomly paired with the six Home Run Derby participants. Irving Oil will present the winner of the Home Run Derby with a $1,000 grand prize, and the fan teamed with the Home Run Derby Champion will receive a $500 Irving Oil gas card. The runner-up in the competition will receive a $500 prize, and the fan paired with him gets a $250 Irving Oil gas card.
The first two rounds of the 2008 Irving Oil Home Run Derby are scheduled to begin at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 16 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The finals will be held during a stoppage in play during the middle of the second inning of the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game later that night.
The 25 year-old Bell has appeared in 72 games for the Sea Dogs this season batting .285 with 14 doubles and 48 runs scored. He leads the team in hits (85), RBI (48) and home runs (13). Last season with the Single-A Lancaster JetHawks, Bell was selected for both the 2007 Mid-Season and End of Year California League All-Star Game capturing the California League batting title with a .370 average. Named the California League MVP and Rookie of the Year, Bell earned MVP honors for the California League All-Star Game in 2007. He led the Red Sox minor league system in overall batting average (.337), second in home runs (26) and RBI (105) in 2007. Bell was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 39th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
