Baysox Can't Solve Stammen, Senators
July 12, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Harrisburg, PA) - The Baysox got another outstanding start from David Hernandez but could not solve Senators pitcher Craig Stammen, dropping game two of a four-game series 1-0 Saturday night. Hernandez allowed one run in 6.0 innings of work, giving up just three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Each team managed just four hits in the pitcher's duel. Matt Wieters picked up a single to extend his hitting streak to eleven games.
The Senators pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hernandez walked Javi Herrera to lead off the inning and Herrera moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Marco Yepez. Seth Bynum drove a double off the wall in right field to bring Herrera in to score and give Harrisburg a 1-0 lead.
That was all Craig Stammen and the Senators bullpen would need. Stammen went 7.0 shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. Yunior Novoa came on to pitch the top of the eighth and got into some trouble with two outs. Carlos Rojas drew a two-out walk and Blake Davis got a base hit to right field to put runners on first and second. Steve Torrealba came in to pinch hit for Mike Rodriguez and drew a walk to load the bases. The Senators brought in Steve Schmoll to end the threat and he did just that, getting Jonathan Tucker to ground out to second to end the inning.
Wilfrido Perez worked two shutout innings of relief in his second appearance since being promoted to Bowie. Perez allowed just one hit and struck out one batter over his two innings.
With the loss, the Baysox move to 53-42, tied with Harrisburg for second place in the Southern Division. Bowie looks to turn things around Sunday afternoon as they face off against the Senators for the third game of this four-game set.
The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
