Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Binghamton scored the two go-ahead runs in the ninth inning to lead the Mets past the Thunder 3-1 on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton and Binghamton have now split their 12 games against each other so far this season. Trenton had its second largest crowd of the season at Waterfront Park (7,860).
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Binghamton (51-44) loaded the bases up off of Thunder reliever Brian Bruney (0-1). Bruney was added to the Thunder roster today for a Major League Rehabilitation stint courtesy of St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, NJ. St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center is the presenting parter for all Major League rehab player appearances at Waterfront Park. Right fielder Caleb Stewart reached on an infield single with one out. Designated hitter Emmanuel Garcia and Catcher Mike Nickeas followed with walks to load the bases. Thunder reliever Michael Gardner then came on for Bruney. Pinch hitter Salomon Manriquez grounded a ball towards Thunder shortstop Reegie Corona, as the Thunder looked to turn a double-play to end the inning. Corona threw to Second baseman Walter Ibarra for an out, but Ibarra's return throw to First baseman Carlos Mendonza ended up going past him for an error. Stewart and Garcia both scored to put the Mets on top 3-1. Binghamton closer Eddie Kunz then came on and retired the Thunder 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning for his Eastern League-leading 25th save of the season.
Down 1-0 in the eighth inning, the Thunder tied the game against Binghamton reliever Tim Lavigne (2-1). With runners at first and third base with one out, Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Despite blowing the save, Lavigne picked up the win. Binghamton scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Nickeas. Thunder starting pitcher Chase Wright received a no-decision. He scattered six hits and allowed only one run in seven innings. Bruney took the loss giving up one hit and two runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 innings. Binghamton starting pitcher Jon Niese tossed seven shutout innings, but also received a no-decision. Thunder Catcher P.J. Pilittere had three hits in the loss. As well, Gonzalez and Thunder Center fielder Austin Jackson had two hits in defeat.
Trenton and Binghamton will play the third game of the four-game series on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Jason Jones (10-3, 2.15) will start for Trenton against Binghamton RHP Salvador Aguilar (10-2, 2.84). Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
