Portland Rallies From 4-0 Deficit In Opener

New Britain, CT - The Portland Sea Dogs (52-41) rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the opener and received a combined three-hitter from Dustin Richardson and Richie Lentz in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from the New Britain Rock Cats by scores of 8-6 and 2-1 on Saturday night.
In the opener, the Sea Dogs rallied from a four-run deficit by scoring five times in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth frame, and held on for the win.
Sea Dog starter Kris Johnson was touched for four runs on four hits, five walks and a hit batsman in just three innings. Dustin Martin homered to lead off the first and Drew Butera hit a long ball to highlight a three-run third inning as New Britain raced to a 4-0 lead.
However, the Sea Dogs were able to touch Zachary Ward (2-6) and reliever Jason Miller for eight runs on six hits, three walks and a costly error over the fifth and sixth frames.
In the fifth, Bubba Bell hit an RBI double after Mickey Hall started the frame with a single. After a walk, Jeff Corsaletti extended his hit streak to 15 games with an RBI double. A throwing error by Toby Gardenhire made it 4-3, and sacrifice flies by Zach Daeges and Jorge Jimenez gave the Dogs the lead.
Portland added three runs in the sixth frame on RBI doubles by Tony Granadillo and Aaron Bates, sandwiched around a Corsaletti sacrifice fly.
Chad Rhoades (3-3) tossed a scoreless fourth inning to earn the win. T.J. Large fired scoreless fifth and sixth innings, but left with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and final inning. Beau Vaughan relieved him and, after allowing a two-run single to Gardenhire, induced Rodolfo Palacios to hit into a game-ending double play.
In the nightcap, Dustin Richardson (6-5) returned from a stint on the disabled list and a rehab stint with Lowell to toss five innings of two-hit ball, allowing only two runners past first base (a Gardenhire homer in the third inning and a walk and single to open the sixth inning).
Richie Lentz entered the game in the sixth with the tying and go-ahead runners on base. He got out of the jam with a pop-up and two strikeouts, then worked around a leadoff double in the seventh inning for his first Double-A save.
Portland's only offense in game two came in the fourth inning. With two outs, Aaron Bates walked and Zach Daeges followed with his second home run of the season off Kyle Aselton (4-3), who allowed only two hits in five innings.
