Providence Bruins News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - It was a high pace, high intensity game in Bridgeport, Connecticut. But despite outshooting the Sound Tigers 35-29, the Providence Bruins lost this one 4-3.
Bridgeport thought they had secured a lead just 13 seconds into the game when a defensive scramble in front of the net ended with a puck in the net. The goal was waived off after review revealed the puck to have been kicked in by a Sound Tiger.
Zane McIntyre came up with a big save against a Bridgeport break away, spurring Tommy Cross, Ben Youds, and Brandon DeFazio to pair off with a couple of Sound Tigers. This game marked the fifth time these two teams have matched up - and emotions ran high on both sides.
Zack Phillips put Providence on the board first, with 3:10 left to play in the opening stanza. Chris Breen sent the puck to Phillips whose bomb from the top of the circle slipped through Williams. Alexander Khokhlachev was also credited with a helper.
Bridgeport tied the game just a minute into the second period. Halmo skated away from a scrum in front of the net with the puck. His big shot from the blue line found a way through the scrum and past McIntyre to score the equalizer.
Vaive gave Bridgeport the 2-1 lead when his backhand shot got over McIntyre's blocker right off the faceoff. Wright scored a minute later to put the Sound Tigers up 3-1.
But just a minute after two Bridgeport goals, Seth Griffith cut the lead to one. Phillips beat a defender down the right wing, then dished the puck to Griffith whose wrist shot beat Williams high stick side. This goal tied Griffith with Frankie Vatrano for Providence goals this season. Griffith is 10-16-26 over 24 games.
Halmo scored his second of the night with 2:33 left in the second period. A mistaken drop pass in the Providence Bruins offensive zone resulted in a 3v1 for Bridgeport, which Halmo was able to capitalize on.
Khokhlachev knocked in a Griffith rebound 5:30 into the third period to cut the Bridgeport lead to 4-3.
Providence is back home at the Dunk Sunday January 3rd against the Rochester Americans.
